So Hong Kong people would choose a black dial Day Date before a white dial D-D?

I guess that's certainly true for Explorer II and Daytona.

Actually why? Seems to be true for all of Asia... and mostly the opposite in the West where we prefer white.

Hi Genji
To your understanding, yes
to my understanding yes too.
Since Black dial on a watch naturally had a wonderful contract on white gold, yellow gold or Pink gold case and hands.

I think when watch was invented, only till recently black dial has becoming more popular I mean the late 70 years, before, most of them porcelain, enamel or gold.

As you had mentioned, not just Asian , European also in fond of Black, that is the reason why Rolex produce less on Black dial, such as you mentioned Explorer II, Daytona.

One thing for sure that if the Daytona black seems having clearer on reading the time.

Also Black has a hidden implication of "Power", seems it is more prone be more for men.

Same for Day Date, you can go to any Rolex AD shop to see how many black dial Day Date they can show you... I can tell : "almost Nothing"!
that is why collectors tend go for black instead of gold, of white...

if that Dial is onyx (black), price could be very very expensive...

We had sold one Submariner Ref 16618 in Onyx at HKD$180,000, if that is blue, the price is about HK$120,000 max.

So price of a Rolex is much depends on colour of the dial.

Hi Snob,

恭喜發財!

Thanks for your explanation! I used to have the white dial Daytona and definitely not easy to read the sub-dials...

I think I mostly like colourful dials - I have 116718LN Green Dial and 116618LB Sunburst Blue Dial. But I do admit that there is something quite good about the way black and gold contrast.

I remember one time you also had a Lapis submariner on your site. Hope I can see one in real life one day!

I've been thinking about buying the black dial 118238 at Lung Shing. Maybe I better hurry up and do it if black is uncommon for Day-Date.

Decisions, decisions.

Anyway thanks for your thoughts!

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter, 118238 Black, that is a great stuff to me...How much you are offered at Lung Shing?

Well, the Sub lapis is a sad story, I worn it once on my hand and decided to buy a Daytona gold... I was offered only HKD$120,000 but then after I passed, he auctioned for HKD$780,000!

How about join our HK Watch fever club we can share more ? if you are interested and if you are always in HK whatsapp me +639989811111.

Hi Snob,

Lung Shing want HKD115K for the 118238 black dial. Must be a very early production 118238 as it has the old style clasp. I had a look at it but didn't really attempt to negotiate as I was just checking in quickly before going the other direction to visit Kuen Kee to look at a white dial 118238. But the more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to go back and buy the black dial at LS after they reopen after CNY.

Wow... very sad story about missing out on that Lapis!

Sure thanks. I live in Hong Kong, so I'll add you in Whatsapp and say hello there.

Cheers,

Peter
