The Big Mac index and Rolex Daytona

The Big Mac index is regarded as an indicator of purchasing power and it shows us the price evolution in any given country of this exact burger. What the historical pricing data tells us is that Big Mac prices have gone up considerably and quite consistently. The average price for a Big Mac burger in the USA is US$5.66 in 2021, and it was US$5.30 in January 2018. In comparison, the same burger would have cost you only US$3.57 in 2008 and just US$2.51 in 2000.

Looking at the above 40 years chart, listing the prices for several Rolex models, the seasoned chart-ninjas among you will have noticed one key anomaly: the end of the Rolex chart is as flat as a pancake. Since 2012, prices remained mostly the same across the listed Rolex models. That is more than 5 years now that we haven’t seen any (significant) price increase for these models. Looking at all the years prior, that is a pattern that is absolutely out of the ordinary. The Big Mac price however, has gone up consistently. Comparing with year 2000 to 2021, what is the Big Mac appreciation , it is 2.25Xhow about a Rolex Daytona in 2000 a Daytona 116520 is about US$9,600.00. By 2021 if you don’t use that Daytona and keep it as it was bought , it’s a NOS, now you can sell it at $25,600. That is 2.66X.

From the curve, only Daytona can catch up with the Big Mac, second one is Explorer II 16570 say A series. It was about 2.2X  appreciation from 2000 to 2021.

Note that the price is the old watch is highest when it is kept as new (NOS) if that is being used and loss of warranty, price would be drastic reduced.

Daytona price seen down fall a lot today!

These few days we have seen a  significant downfall of Daytona white steel (116500LN) price. It is from last week's  $270,000 to today's $255,000. And there is real transaction.

Many potential Daytona buyer welcome seeing this signs for price going down where they can possibly buy one.

Some even expect that the price will go down further same as last December 's $210,000.

Well, that is still 2X the price of AD's SRP...

What do you think its price will be in May 2021?'

Daytona Price drops in these ten days

Daytona price is first seen drop after all these years of going up.

It was shocking high price before Watches and Wonders held in 7 April as people kept speculating the discontinuing of Daytona 116500LN. However, they found 13 of models gone but added in 16 new models. The steel King White 116500LN is still existing. Dealers who has stocked 10 or 50 pieces  started to feel uncomfortable. These few days we see a price drop from last week’s  $290,000 to today’s $270,000

How about tomorrow, we know not... the one who bought last week would definitely not willing to see the price drop again. And who has prepared money is now waiting to see when he should move in buying!

Rolex Daytona will continue on the rise?

What is in the hype now?

In 2012-2018 the hype was GMT Master no matter the green pointer 116710LN, the Batman 116710BLNR, the Vintage 1675, Pepsi 126710BLRO and the latest Batgirl 126710BLNR are the hot topics in social media.

In 2018-2020 was SeaDweller 126600 Single Red, we started selling at $98000 up to $114,000.

September 2020, Rolex launched the colour OP (Oyster Perpetual) with 31, 36, 41mm.

Initially there were some stock but no soon later there was no more.

Ref 126000 Tiffany Blue $92,000

Ref 126000 Green $89,000

Ref 126000 Orange $82,000

Latest price of Rolex at dealers, not Boutique as there is no way for getting a Rolex Model at SRP nowadays without long waiting.

GMT Master II Pepsi 126710BLRO $150,000

GMT Master II Batgirl 12671lBLNR $142,000

Submariner
126610LN Black $100,000

126610LV Starbucks $148,000

116610LV Hulk (discon.) $142,000

Daytona

However, ever since 2009 up to now, people never stop talking on Daytona. Meaning Daytona s the perpetual talking point.

Daytona Green gold 116508 was $356000 in 2020 but now $490,000

Daytona ICE blue platinum 116505

$720,000

Ref 116519 Grey was $226,000 in 2019 and now $300,000

Ref 116500 Daytona White dial was $190,000 in 2019

Now new one is $230,000

People asks if one day Daytona steel 116500LN would reach price tag of  $320,000?
I think possible. As whatever price is under Rolex’s hand, if he reduce production 20%, price would be up 30%! Simple. Just if they want to do it or not?

Last but not least, what is best to buy now?

Most of the people had switches focus on Daytona rather than GMT Master or Submariner.

Something that you like and not losing value over time… Daytona 116500LN White or 116508 Daytona Green dial if you like the look which is not my cup of tea.

Price listed here are for reference and are subject to changes daily. And it depends on if that is new old stock or not.

Price of Daytona Ceramic has been risen up to another High level again

Rolex Dayona Ceramic Ref 116500LN has reached a highest level back to 2019 April record of $195,000.
Without understanding why at such a time whereby COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, which has become unsteady with a spike of 50 new cases confirmed local infection since last Saturday 11 July.
This week, the price of Daytona Ceramic White 116500LN hit $199,000. Rolex MSRP is $102,400.
I think that is very high. This is the trading price between dealer in Hong Kong as well the selling price of certain AD to their customer. Of course this kind of sales isn't unknown to Rolex Hong Kong. They just could not control it.
Reason why? Well, we have briefly thought about it today with a few collectors.
Mainly Rolex has stopped production for a while in February to April 2020, exact days of stopping production is unknow, another reason is people started to think if that is no more new Rolex roll out news confirmed by now, why we have to wait to buy? As Daytona is always the most sough after model of all Rolexes.
Besides, The Price of Hulk Ref 116610LV Submariner is also risen to an unreasonable level HK$120,000 from a price of $116,000 back in June.
How about NOS GMT Master 116710LN Green pointer? It is selling HK$100,000 for NOS,
How about used one? It is in the range of $82000,88,000 with condition of 90%.
GMT Master two tone Root Beer 126711CHNR is now selling $135,000 with its MSRP at $115,500.
Submariner 116610LN is selling at $89,000 while its MSRP is $61,500 only.
If you can wait, let's see what new Rolex will be introduced in September, but I am sure by then all new models would be hard to get at MSRP.

Price shown here is in HKD, (1 USD=7.76 HKD)
MSRP stands for Manufacturer suggested retail price.

To gold or not to gold – The Rolex Daytona

How much are you willing to pay to be extraordinary? I am talking about your watches. A Rolex Daytona is not rare scenery in Hong Kong. You can see a lot of people wearing the same watch in the MTR or in the restaurant you dine in. When two men walk past each other on the street in Hong Kong, the battle starts instantly. The battle is about your looks, which are based on your clothes, your sneakers and most importantly, your watch. To become superior, going gold may well be your choice.

Here are some of HKWF’s recommendations of the Rolex Daytona – not in stainless steel

1.      Rolex 116508 Green Dial

The new 2016 Rolex yellow gold Daytona will leave you breathless and your potential competitors impressed. The watch has a very sharp sunburst green dial with red accents next to every hour marker. Also, the sub-dials are surrounded by red rings which complement with the green color very well. With the color of Rolex on a yellow gold Rolex cult icon that now has the accuracy rate of +2/-2 per day, what more can you ask for? It also has a new-style tachymeter bezel that has been used only on rose gold, white gold and Daytonas of precious metals on straps. To get one green dial 116508, you have to have around HKD200k. It will be worth your money.

2.      Used yellow gold 16528

Do not want to pay a premium for a yellow gold Rolex? No
Problem. At below 150kHKD, you can always find a 16528
ellow gold Daytona in good condition. It has a movement
modified from the famous Zenith El Primero movement and
has less shiny sub-dials than the newer 116528.

On the wrist, from a layman’s view, it looks like you are wearing a 200k+ Daytona.

3.      Rolex 116515 (new or used)

Want a ceramic bezel but want it not on the new steel 116500ln? The rose gold 116505 may well be your choice. As the ref has been out there for quite some time, you can get a bnib 116505 with some discounts or get a used one at a fairly reasonable and affordable price. What you are getting is a rose gold Daytona with a  brown ceramic bezel on a nicely made alligator strap. The price? Bnib 116515 costs you around 160k HKD while used ones cost you around 120k-130K HKD.
5.      Used Rolex 116509

Afraid of yellow gold? Want something more understated? You should get your hands on any used Rolex white gold 116509 Daytona. It will cost you around 140kHKD. If you want to impress, do try to save up for the diamond paved dial. Your watch will shine like a star under any proper lighting.

Some of us always hold a negative attitude towards yellow gold watches. However, a yellow gold watch is always there to catch your attention. If you can afford one, it is never a bad thing to wear one.

HKWF’s selection of three best stainless steel Daytona references

The Rolex Daytona has been in vogue for over 2 decades, or even more for some earlier references. Earlier, we looked at how this particular ace of Rolex has evolved in time. In this episode, we will look at 3 best stainless steel Daytonas.

1.      Rolex Daytona 6263 – The “Paul Newman” Daytona with exotic dial

The legendary 6263 is on our list, and it always will and should on anyone’s list of favorite Daytonas. A Rolex 6263 Daytona with exotic dial is referred to as “the Paul Newman Daytona” as movie star Paul Newman used to wear it a lot when racing, and not racing. At 37mm, the 6263 has a very exquisite dial layout. It looks classic by any standard. The sub-dials are well placed with appropriate space and balance in between. The numerals on the sub-dials are exquisitely done. The chapter ring is another feature of an “exotic” dial. It matches the tachymeter on the bezel very well.

Other than that, the 6263 has red “Daytona” letters on the dial and features screw-down chronograph pushers. It is a must-have for any Daytona enthusiast and the prices at auctions have proved that.

2.      Rolex 116520 Daytona

The first automatic chronograph with an in-house Rolex movement - is it enough?

The 116520 has been in production since 2000 when it replaced the 16520 which had a modified Zenith movement. The 116520 is now out of production and it is replaced by the new ceramic Daytona 116500ln. However, it was a cult success by any means. The price of the 116520 had always been higher than the retail price. It was such a symbol of status that no other watches could, or can compare.

3.      Rolex 116500ln Daytona Ceramic

Rolex is good at solving problems. While the bezel of the 116520 was said to attract scratches easily, they have now put a ceramic bezel on the newest Daytona ref 116500ln. The new 116500ln is a stunner. The white dial version features the “panda” style dial similar to the legendary 6263. The best thing is that it has a ceramic bezel that is not easily scratched. Other details? The movement’s accuracy is now +2/-2 per day! As the successor of the 116520, it is going to be another cult success. Do get yours before it gets hard to find one.

PS The latest price of the Ref116500LN white is HKD$135,000 as of Today in Market of Hong Kong.

The Rolex 116508 Green dial and the Rolex 116509 blue dial

At Baselworld 2016, Rolex stunned us (or not) with the new ceramic Daytona 116500ln. Other than the new steel Daytona, Rolex also released two precious-metal versions which are the 116508 green dial and the 116509 blue dial. These two watches have added long-awaited colors to the Daytona collection.

You can see that the tachymeter scale on the bezel of the 116508 has been updated. The green sunburst dial is simply stunning with the yellow gold case. The green color here is a very dark forest green or some may call it Rolex Racing Green. It looks very sharp and classic, almost royal. There are red sub-dial rings and red color markers at each hour marker. The result is simply Super! It will surely be a hit as it is the first new dial for the YG Daytona in years, left alone the use of green, the signature color of Rolex.

The 116509 this year is updated with a blue sunburst dial. The colder tone of the blue color matches very well with the tone of white gold. The dial has red sub-dial rings and hands and markers made of white gold.

If you already have a steel Daytona, you might want to consider these two models. The green dial version is especially sharp in yellow gold case. It is certainly one of the killer combos you will find in the collection. However, the white gold version is good for low-profile people. Either will be a good choice for you.

If you need to buy one of these watches, we can get one for you at certain discount.

The evolution of the Rolex Daytona

Many of us are more than ready to get the new Rolex Daytona 116500LN. The Daytona is an interesting watch that has been Rolex’s ace for years. It is almost a cult success. So, how has the Daytona reached its current status?

In 1963 Rolex debuted the first Cosmograph model ref 6239. The features of it included a tachometer scale engraved on the metal bezel and the dials were either in black with silver counters or in silver with black counters.

The name "Daytona" did not appear on the dial until 1965. A new dial version called "exotic" was introduced in 1965. It featured an outer track which matches the sub-dials running around the edge of the dial. The seconds sub-dial is at 9 o'clock and it is marked at 15, 30, 45 and 60.

The ref 6240, which was produced till 1969 only, introduced screw-down push pieces and it became the first ref of the Daytona which was fully waterproof. Interestingly, the word “Daytona” is not always printed on the dial of the 6240. I do think that the “exotic” dial looks way better than usual dials for the 6240.

References 6262 and 6264 were produced between 1970 and 1972. These references adopted push-down buttons with metal bezel or black plastic bezel.. Dials were either white with black sub-dials or vice versa.

From 1971 to 1987, Rolex produced the Daytona 6263 and 6265. These references adopted black plastic bezels and metal bezels and they were waterproof to 100 meters.

The Daytona 6263 is also now known as the “Paul Newman” Daytona because movie star Paul Newman wore the ref 6263 and a ref 6241 on a bund strap. Any Rolex Daytona with exotic dial is known as "The Paul Newman Daytona". Particularly, a Paul Newman dial must be in ref 6239, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264 or 6265.

The most sought-after models of the Daytona today include these “Paul Newman” Daytonas. These watches are often seen fetching very high prices during auctions.

Rolex started in 1988 manufacturing the 16520 Daytona. The watch had a 40mm case instead of a 37mm one and it had sapphire crystals instead of Plexiglas. Before the 16520, the Daytona had always featured a manual-wound movement. The breakthrough came when Rolex adopted a new automatic movement based on the Zenith El Primero 400. The heavily modified movement was then the Calibre 4030. Because of limited supply and super strong demand, the 16520 was a great success.

Some notable models included 16520 with porcelain finish dials and 10-watch-only 16528 blue dial for Rolex collectors.

In 2000, the Rolex Daytona 116520 was out. It featured a totally in-house caliber 4130 and the black dial version had been a very sought-after model from 2000-2015.
So, what has made the Daytona such a success? Maybe it is because of the limited supply. Maybe it is because of the design of the watch. Or, maybe because it is a Rolex chronograph, which has always represented precision from the day it was born. In today’s world in which big watches are in vogue, the Rolex Daytona retains its classic shape in 40mm. The dial style of the new 116500LN white resembles the “panda” style of the “Paul Newman” Daytona, which is one of the most important legacy of the Daytona. Its bezel is now ceramic and it does not attract scratches anymore. These small improvements and dedication to the original details are what it takes for a watch to become legendary.
