Is a Rolex Day Date Ref 1803 An Old watch for Old man!?

A Rolex Ref 1803 White Gold Day Date in Excellent Plus Condition
Price is likely below HKD$47,000!

An Rolex Day Date current 2013 White Gold Model. It is Pricey!

Day Date Ref 1803
Someone thinks that Rolex Ref 1803 Day Date is not just an old Watch, moreover, that is a watch for Old Man! That may not be wrong as …We know that Day Date Ref 1803 is one of the best watches ever built in 56s-70s.  Day date is made only with “Gold!” no Stainless steel Day Date!

Young Chinese does think Gold is a symbol of money-minded, an icon of Wealth, Shinny, showy, high profile image!

Many Hong Kong Chinese has is a psychological barrier to use something look “Gold” if you are not really rich… Mainlander Tu Hao is an exception….They buy Painting, Stamps, Watches, Antique whatever is expensive could be treated as an Investment.

That is why I  think that there is approximately 99% of HK man aged between 20-30 is wearing stainless steel (or White Gold at most) watches.

There may be about 3% of the man aged between 30-40 wear Gold Colour Gold plated watch.

May be 8% of the men aged between 40-55 uses gold watch including gold plated watch.

After people get aged above 60s, many of them would prefer White Colour stuff again: richer one might go for Platinum or White Gold watches.

There is no solid statistical data to support the saying, those are an estimated percentage from friends I know and observations in Hong Kong.

As for myself, I am now more eager to get a White gold or Platinum watch (If I can afford…) rather than yellow gold.

If I can choose, Platinum, White gold, Pink Gold, Yellow gold, stainless steel.
using DLC, Plastic, Silicon Rubber Fibre–composite, Ceramic as for the watch case material is not my cup of tea unless the watch is below HKD$10,000

Price of a Day Date
There is still a large number of Day Date now I the pre-owned watch market as this is one of the most durable watch on Earth, it lasts almost forever…

As three Day Date in the 60s could possible buy a small Home of 600 Square feet in Kowloon Area.

Day Date was an expensive watch so as now. People would use it with extreme care. Thank god that there are still chance to get the excellent Condition one, Mint one may be a bit hard to get, it is in some collectors’ drawers.

Look at the new 2013 Rolex Day Date that comes with Six colour, Price is HKD$176,000. Even you get VIP discount off 14% today. Still I possibly could by 3.5 pieces of yellow gold 1803, or 2.5 pieces of White Gold 1803. That may be Good enough to buy One excellent Plus 1803 with coloured-dial!

That is fun for Watch Collection, again Ref 1803 is under-valued.

Warning
Rolex 1803 is like Drugs, once you have tried to get one, you will be POSIONED!

As Rolex Says "it is not just tell time, it tells History!!" Ref 1803 is probably has the best History to tell....

President Watch Rolex Ref 1803

Rolex Ref 1803

President Watch Rolex 1803
I believe 90% people tend to buy Oyster sport watch more than anyone who would consider go for an elegant Rolex Day Date.  Day Date is also called “President Watch” is simply this watch was preferred by most American Presidents, Johnson, Kennedy, human Right activist Martin Luther King…etc.
From the enquires for enquiry watch amongst all blog comment, 99% is asking Non Day Date model, yes of course, these price is more affordable as a Rolex Day Date is 4 times more expensive that Stainless steel. Rolex Day Date does not come with stainless steel, only Platinum or Gold.
Recently we see a trend, younger people would like to go for the Day Date series, even a 22 lady, a lawyer undergraduate is looking for a Rolex Date Just Onyx as first choice and a Black dial Day Date with Arabic numerals dial as second choice. I am surprise what a taste she has about Rolex, probably her father a Rolex user, or her law practitioner wearing Rolex Gold Watch.

This is not Ref 1803, but the one the Lawyer student is looking for.

The Major Trigger for more younger peoples shifting their focus from sport Oyster series Rolex into Day Date was BaselWorld 2013; Rolex unveiled the new Day Date (Ref 118138)!

New Rolex Day Date Ref 118138 to be released end 2013
From Hon Kong Collectors, we could see a new heat for looking good Rolex Day Date specially Ref 1803.
So, Why Rolex Ref 1803!?
Ref 1803 were produced in 1958 to 1976, from the technological aspect on evaluating Ref 1803, it was a new technology break though that could have both “Date” and “Day” display on the dial, an extra set of driving wheel system has to be incorporated in order do the job. As the movement has to be having sufficient power enough to change the date at between 1200-0100 midnight whilst maintain a power reserve of 40 hours.
Rolex developed the Cal, 1556 with high repeatable accuracy, durability and has double shock resistant protection, super quiet movement and that tells you how small the friction inside the watch.
The preset of the Date was made by “Niche forward 3 backward 3’ Adjustment: when we want to advance the “Date”, we could retard the minutes hand backward from 12 o’clock to 9 o’clock, and forward it again from 9 O’clock to 12 O’clock, the Date would advance one notch, and so on for next advance, That was an ingénues design. The 1972 An AP Royal Oak Jumbo were also adapted this method for the Date advance.

The Classic Rolex Ref 1803

Rolex Ref 1803 with UAE Coat of Arms

Rolex Ref 1803 Light Green Dial with Roman Numerals Dial

What is the selling Price now for Ref 1803?
Material Choice
Most sought after is Platinum ref 1805, extremely Rare and expensive
Next is Rose Gold Ref 1803-5 and White gold Ref 1803-9 and yellow gold Ref 1803-8
Dial with Diamond is more expensive than no diamond of course,  colour with Stella Red, Green, Yellow, Turquoise will be very expensive
Then the Purple, Grey, Brown, White, and lowest price is the most common one Champagne Gold.
Price is ramping up gradually within these few months, and I think it is still reasonable to buy, as still 90% of the people looking for stainless steel watch of Rolex, buy could you imagine that the same price could possibly buy a Rolex Ref 1803-8 which bring the whole history of this President Watch and could possibly work side by side with you for the next few decades?
If you had a chance to spot one, check and consider it. But there are a lot fake dial Ref 1803, frankenwatch made by changing parts from other model into this Ref 1803, go for a reliable source for the purchase!

How Much Gold you think your Rolex Day Date President Ref 1803 contain?

The solid gold Rolex watch is really a thing of beauty though many people especially younger does not like the Yellow Gold, they say too much, too bling, overdo… as my opinion; well,  Gold is the ultimate precious metal to make watch. Probably I am old enough to wear that, as many people criticize wearing a gold Rolex looks Fuddy-Duddy. Anyway, many people think differently, I like it as it is the REAL THING!

The typical gents Rolex President looks rather impressive due to its obvious mass and weight not to mention the price tag that goes with it.  Did you ever really wonder what the actual gold value is in a Rolex President? Below we have taken an 18kt. gold Rolex Ref 1803 and have removed the movement, the crystal, O-rings, and other non-gold parts. We weighed each part using a handheld electronic balance. We are sure you will find the results very interesting.

These are the basic component parts of the Rolex. The band, the bezel ring that holds the crystal in place, the main case, and the case back.

Inside of the case back you will see that it is marked as being 18kt. It also has the decimal value of .750. This means that 75 percent of the weight is pure gold. Pure gold is 24kt. The pure gold is alloyed with silver, copper, and zinc. Also notice the official Rolex markings on the inside of the case back.

The clasp is also marked with the gold content as well as being marked with the Rolex logo. There is also a number that is the official part number for this band. This band has the bark finish.

This is the head or case ring of the Rolex. It is also marked 18kt. A genuine Rolex case will also have a Registered Design number engraved between the lugs at the 12 position. In this case, the number is 1803. Between the lugs at the 6 position you will find the serial number of the case.

Assuming 99.99 pure gold price of HKD$350 a gram as of Today for a reference.
Using these parts the actual gold value of this Rolex can be determined as follows.
-- Case ring weights 18.5 grams. Contains 13.875 grams of pure gold. It has a value of $4,856.25
--Case back weighs 7.21 grams. Contains 5.4075 grams of pure gold. It has a value of $1,892.625
--Bezel weighs 5.30 grams. Contains 3.975 grams of pure gold. It has a value of $1,391.25
--The bracelet weighs 68.85 grams including the two pins. Contains 51.6375 grams of pure gold. It has the most value at $18,073.125
The total value of the pure 24kt. gold in this Rolex President Ref 1803 is $26,213.25

Rolex DD Ref 1803 as a target Investment Item

Day Date

Patented July 23. 1955 - official Released in 1956. The 6511 the "Day Date" had a window at “12” spelling out the day at 12 and the date was shown at “3”. Due to the complexity of the watch, extra power to advance two discs at midnight. With new automatic movement, additional day and date discs and a screw down back it was a very large and thick watch which gave it presence on the wrist. Introduced as a niche model it soon gained the popularity it deserves and after the introduction of the concealed clasp (concealed clasp was offer as $75 option in 1969) it was known as the "President".

The Day Date immediately became Rolex's flagship till now. The first model (6511) lasted just over a year before it was replaced by the externally identical 6611. This model featured the new caliber 1055 movement with its free sprung Micro-Stella balance and was the first to be labeled "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. This new accuracy standard guaranteed the watch to remain within + 3.0 seconds per day. In 1959 caliber 1055 was replaced with caliber 1555 in model 1803 (18,000bph) and later in year 1965 - model 1803 received caliber 1556 (19,800bph).

In 1977 caliber 3055 (quick-set) was introduced in model 18038 and in 1988 caliber 3155 (double quick-set) was introduced in model 18238.

Caliber 3155 is the caliber still used today in all Day-Date models.

The Day Date earned the nickname the "President" when Rolex reportedly gave one to the then President of the United States Dwight Eisenhower. Some sources say that President Eisenhower was actually given a Date Just (not Day-Date) with the presidential style bracelet. But it is a fact that several other US presidents are known to wear Day-Date (Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan).

These early models did not have the hack feature and appeared rather bulky. In their never ending quest to modernize the basic configuration of the Day Date, Rolex designers have changed from the bulbous bubble-back look of the early models to the slender shape employed today.

With only a few mild case design changes over the years the first modification to the Day Date was the addition of the hack feature in about 1972. This allowed the second hand to be stopped dead if you wanted to set the time via a preset accurate source. At this time the shape of the head was essentially the same as it is today. The Day Date was available in white gold, yellow gold, pink gold and platinum although in early 70's the pink gold watch was phased out.

The "Quick set" feature (caliber 3055) solved one of the watches biggest problems. Introduced in the late 1970's Quick set was added to all Rolex models by 1983. Instead of turning the crown round and round to change the date the wearer could just pull the button out half way and a few turns at most and the correct date was displayed.

The introduction of the quick set feature also coincided with other developments for the Day Date. The inclusion of the sapphire crystal not only gave the watch a sleeker look but also added to the durability of the watch. The early Day Date models were waterproof to 165 feet (50 meters) while the current model is safe at depths of up to 100 meters.

Introduced in 1988/89 was the "Double Quick Set" watch with caliber 3155. This was model 18238 and it made the setting of the Day and Date even easier as they could both be done on the button.

From the end of 2000 the Day Date has been available in pink gold again. The watch has also been introduced with slightly redesigned case with polished lugs, smooth bezel is now domed, a domed sapphire crystal, solid center links on now heavier bracelet and can also come on an oyster bracelet to bring it in line with many of their other models.

The Baselworld has preview on new Day Date of 6 colour dial, comes with Leather strap or oyster strap, give a new younger look for the new young big spenders of the 30’s.

The Day Date across the world has become synonymous with class and style. This watch remains one of the most prestigious additions a man can have to his wardrobe.

Amongst all fabulous Day Date made over the years, Ref 1803 is still one of the collector’s choice as there are numerous colour made with precious stone or material as dial. There is new group of collector now focusing on collecting Ref 1803 from now and then. The current price of Rolex Ref 1803 is still considered Cheap! When the new younger buyer come into search onto this Rolex Category as collectors choice, Price of Ref 1803 will rise sharply, Please do not underestimate the new China Demand for quality vintage Rolex.

Rolex Ref 1803 Fat Boy

This is one of the so called "Fat Boy", an early issue from Rolex under the model Ref 1803.
It looks bigger, and in fact, it is wider on teh case!

The black Roman Numerals on champange dial is a good match.

Worst thing is Paul always say: "Not for sale!" , likely because it is "Near Mint" condition.

It is a Classic Relex DD!

Is Rolex an Expensive Watch? What is the value of your watch you bought 36 years ago!?

                                                               Ref 1803 Crica 1977
                                                    Ref 1803 Circa 1977

Ref 1803 with Stella Red Dial

There is no definition on what watch is classified as “expensive” and “Cheap”

Definitely a watch with price tag under $100 is average watch price. In most of the available general watch category, $100 can have 60% of the watch choice in the market. Something like $20 or below is cheap watch. However, you can go to buy 5 watches with $15, that is to say, $3 for a Watch in Ap Liu Street. For the Higher end watch, I have difficulty to define, all there is difficulty to re-define the “expensive Watch” is. Someone is wearing a Richard Millie Turbillon to play tennis, some of the collector buys Patek Phillipe with $1.3M in auction. A Cartier Crash has a price tag of $70,000 is just one toy in some celebrity jewelry’s box. To them that is not expensive... to me that is the money I can make use of for my retirement!

What are expensive watches made of? Why are they expensive?!

A watch can generally be a great investment, especially if you have bought them for a reasonable price compared to their estimated market value. Particular watches that seem to hold their value well are those that contain jewels such as sapphire gems. Sapphire is one the most expensive stones in the world making watches containing them particularly expensive!

All expensive watch uses Synthetic Sapphire with second to diamond for it hardness as the crystal. Cheaper watches use a glass crystal which is prone to be scratched and worn out. Some special crystal are made to the precision of 5 microns. Cheap watch glass are made with 30 microns or even worse.

Material cost itself is nothing as more expensive to the Technology that has been used to make the watch, the Blue mainspring of Rolex, has been the known of the best material for the main spring. That is free from magnetization and insert to temperature changes, a fake Watch may just use simple steel wire.

The most expensive watches will use a variety of rare gem stones, diamonds and crystals to cover the face – ensuring durability and scratch free surfaces.

The special features of particular expensive watches

Expensive watches are generally held together with a variety of screws rather than pins. But the quality doesn’t just end there. These screws are made from the same material as the watch. For example, your Rolex Day Date use solid 18KT gold pins to lock the strap onto the watch. Everything you see on the watch is made of Solid Gold with polishing. This just goes to show the quality put into expensive watches. You really do get what you pay for!

Each expensive watch should be solid in structure. The links contained on the strap would not appear cheap, jagged and they shouldn’t be able to be physically detached.

Wearing your watch in any weather and climate can cause some low priced watches a few problems, especially in the rain! With expensive watches, there should never be this problem. They are built so precisely and securely that the tightening of all of the screens will ensure that the watches are water-resistant and ensure that water cannot enter the inner workings of your watch. However that does not imply all expensive watch, some of the expensive watch cannot have very good watch-proof. Not even sweat-proof! So don’t use the price of a watch to determine the watch-proof feature. Some of the very expensive watch does not guarantee they will never fail, especially when they are dropped.

How about Rolex?
Rolex, on the other hand is one of the most successful and most conservative Swiss watch company

They do not have produced any Tourbillon, they do not use Titanium, they do not have ceramic case… they don't make DLC diamond like coating on the cast, the most expensive Rolex are still using oldest Precious “Gold*” or Platinum* to make watch. Well, to me, it seems that insofar the watch of Gold cannot be underestimated.

What is the value of a Rolex after using 37 years?
Rolex watch uses approximately 118 gram of solid 18Kt gold for a Day Date Ref 18039.

As for a long term investment, I think Solid Gold Rolex has the best power to retain value and a hedge to gain value again the inflation.

Rolex Day Date Ref 1803 1977

If I am not wrong in 1976, A Two Tone Date Just was HKD$1,786. A Ref 1803 was about HKD$9,000, after using it for 37 years, you still can sell the watch with HKD$60,000, if you do not like the watch, you can sell it for the gold, a Ref 1803 weight approximately 133 gram, you keep the movement, dial and hands, there are still about 103 gram of gold!

With Today’s gold price HKD$14,000 a tael (38 grams), you still get CASH HKD$28,460. Don't forget that you have been using it for 37 years!  But if your one is Stella Red dial I bet you would not sell it for its gold as it is having a value of more than HKD$200,000 how!

Note*

Gold has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history Middle Easterns 6,000 BC. Gold standards have sometimes been monetary policies, but were widely supplanted by fiat currency starting 1930s. Gold is still the most welcome article in Pawn Shops in HK and South East Asia as that is almost pegged with Dollar in terms of value.

Platinum was discovered by Antonio de Ulloa (1735) the same year Jehan-Jacques Blancpain found the Watch Company “Blancpain" in Switzerland.
