Vintage Time- Rolex Ref 1803

Vintage watches are still in vogue today thanks to a lot of stars and celebrities wearing them. Vintage Rolexes are here to stay. We have brought to you some of the more popular vintage sports models. Let’s also take a look at the ref that is gaining popularity - the Day Date 1803.

Modern Day-Dates sell for more than 150kHKD. If you want to get the newest Day-Date 40, you have to pay over 200kHKD. However, going vintage can be a good idea if you want a taste of the Rolex Day-Date.

A Day-Date 1803 yellow gold sells for around 100k on President Bracelet. Without the bracelet, it sells for around 50k. Paying that amount of money to get a solid gold Rolex is not a bad deal. The 1803 features an acrylic crystal which is domed in shape. At 36mm, the watch offers many versions of dials. The more interesting dials are those which have aged to obtain a certain hue of other colors.

You can pair your 1803 with different straps for different styles. While dial variations are very interesting to play with, a 1803 will certainly stand out in a forest of sports models. There are also special dials such as the Stella enamel dials and the gem stone dials. They are very good choices to pair with your vintage style clothes.

Picking up a 1803 now is a good choice as its price is still lower than it should be. Nobody knows when the price of it will increase drastically after one of the stars wear them and starts the hype.

Remarks
A Stella Dial Day-Date is a rare example of a 1970s watch that came with a colored, hard enamel dial.  They came in a variety of rich, bright colors.
They are solid enamel, they are prone to cracking, so perfect examples are quite rare.  Over the past few years, they have become rather popular, and valuable, with some examples hitting the $30,000 at auction, though we should say the average Stella dial sells below $20,000.  Collectors often put these enamel dial Presidents on matching leather straps.

From Cannonrun to Lamborghini Countach, Waterman filigree to Rolex Day Date White Gold 1803.

The Cannonball Run is a 1981 Technicolor comedy film starring Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett, and Jackie Chan. It was produced by Hong Kong's Golden Harvest films, and distributed by 20th Century Fox. One of 1981's most successful films at the box office, it was followed by Cannonball Run II (1984), and Speed Zone (1989).

The story is about a cross-country car race... we could see Dodge Tradesmans Ambulance, red Farrar 308 GTS, Mercedes Benz 280SEL sedan…

Jackie Chan and Michael Hui race in a high-tech, computer-laden Subaru GL 4WD hatchback with a rocket booster engine.

Roger Moore drives a silver Aston Martin DB5.

Jill Rivers (Tara Buckman) and Marcie Thatcher (Adrienne Barbeau), two attractive women who use their looks to their advantage, start the race in a black Lamborghini Countach. My eye was widely open to see such so car super car racing and overtaking the Police cars in few seconds!

Jamie Farr portrays an oil-rich Middle-Eastern sheikh, driving a white Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.

Jill and Marcie use sex appeal as their weapon, unzipping their race suits to display copious amounts of cleavage during traffic stops.  My eyes opened even wider! However, this fails to work on a busty female traffic officer played in a cameo appearance by actress Valerie Perrine.

That was an amazing film, a lot so stars and fabulous cars of the 70s.

Jeff Ippoliti, a 51-year-old attorney in Celebration, Fla., loved the Movie, So Bought the Lamborghini.

When "The Cannonball Run" came out in 1981, he fell in love with the 1979 Lamborghini Countach LP 400S that's in the first scene. He thought it was the coolest car ever, and he didn't know any kid his age who didn't have a poster of it on his wall.

12 Exhaust Pipes and CB Antenna

After he bought the car, he immediately put the car in a 2½-year restoration by Lamborghini expert Tony Lerardi. We made it true to the movie. The 12 exhaust pipes, even the CB antennae—it's all there in exact detail. Refer to the pictures.

Jeff Ippoliti's Lamborghini Countach LP 400S.

So As I love this Black Countach, but I am afraid I could not afford buying such a car…

This story started with car end ended with Watch, the first time I saw a gentleman with silver lines wearing a Watch… It was a Rolex… I noticed that with an additional Window at the 12’ o’clock position…

Curiosity pushed me to find out more… Oh, that watch was called “Day Date” the flagship of Rolex… That’s why I could recall I saw a lot of Time  magazine that carried this watch as an ad.

It is white colour as the man’s choice, he loved Sterling Silver, he loved Waterman Sterling silver filigree fountain pen. He used to carry his White Gold Rolex Day Date Ref 1803, and a Waterman Sterling Silver Filigree fountain pen 452.

Rolex Day Date in White gold Ref 1803, 1977

I was wearing a Rolex Stainless Steel Date Just with White gold fluted bezel, I told myself whenever I could afford I should get one of those White Gold Day Date.

You cannot get everything you like for example a 1979 Lamborghini Countach… but at least I get a Rolex…white gold Day Date one of the best from Rolex.

The Moral of the story, you cannot get everything in the world, get something you can afford and it could last… Like a Countach., till now, it is a Collectible Vintage… Like a White Gold Day Date.. is it very pricy!

Someone criticizes me… It is partly because of me that makes the price go up! Really!?

May be... as these are all truly Classic!

Rolex Day Date 1803 in Stella Dial.

In the 1970’s, Rolex made a series of colored dials with a multi-layered lacquer coat. Referred to as
Stella dials, they can give the impression of porcelain and there is a certain translucency about them.
There were red, turquoise, green, yellow, purple…
This is the green … on Ref 1803 Day Date in white gold.
It is a Collectible item.
Market Value is about HKD$130,000 to 170,000 in Excellent Condition…

The legendary Rolex Day Date Ref 1803

You’re not ready!
You’re young.
You haven’t been with the company all that long.
You’re not quite sure of your position.
Maybe in a few years, when you’re a little bit established.
But not yet.
Of course, if you disagree, you can visit an official Rolex jeweler!

This is a Rolex Advertisement for Rolex Day Date set with Diamonds in 1980’s! A bit ironry.

Very often I'm asked which Rolex watch that I fond of most. My reply, without hesitation, would be the Day Date 1803.

I have a few early Day Dates in my collection. A Particular piece is a 18KT Yellow Gold 1803 that has witnessed these moment in time such as  1967 riot in Hong Kong,  Wall Street crisis on Oct. 19 1987,  the US Challenger disaster on Jan 28 1986, the June 4 1989 Tiananmen incident and the
Occupy Central taken place in Hong Kong for more than 36 days up to now!

The Events are memorial and worth human being to take time to think about what we have went wrong, but the Rolex is everything close to perfect.

These Rolex 1803 have been running all these years, day and night, without any sign of wear and tear after half of a century.  The one that I always use remains accurate, quiet, reliable and most of all look handsome all the time.

President Watch
The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, the only Rolex watch that shows both day and the date simultaneously, was born in 1956. Originally, it was designed and made exclusively for those who are holding an important position of a company like a president and hence the model name President. It is still being manufactured today. It is one of the most prestigious models of all Rolex Watches.

It has many major advanced features as the DATE JUST plus additional Day wheel that has been gone through a series of technological advancement allow change day and date simultaneously at mid-night without taking excessive energy from the mainspring. It has a Perpetual Rotor for Automatic winding; screw down crown, Date with Cyclops magnifying glass at 3 o'clock position and Day display at 12 o'clock; water resistant to 100 meters.

The case is 36 by 13 mm. 1803 is non-quick-set with plastic crystal.  We have to first advance the hours hands to change the right day and then using the forward one quarter and back one quarter at 2345- 0000 to change the Date. It sounds a bit clumsy but with this design, it has less components, hence the watch is and thinner compare with the later generation 18038 single-quick-set with sapphire crystal started from 1977; and 118238 double-quick-set with sapphire crystal since around 1994 (double-quick-set referring to quick-set for both day and date).

Material for Day Date is limited to precious metals like 18kt yellow, pink, white gold or Platinum. There is no stainless steel Rolex Day Date. I have not seen any one of those someone told me that there are 7 pieces of Day Date that were said made with Stainless Steel.

The fun of collecting Rolex Day Date 1803 starts with choices of material, colour and design of the dial. One can choose dial material from Onyx, jade, birch, Oak, Lapis Lazuli, Aventurine, tiger eye, just to name a few more…. Plus many other choice of colors is available like Stella Red, Green, Turquoise, yellow, Chicken-blood Red, black, blue, purple, white, champagne gold, silver, white.

In design, there is strip form, round dot, door step, embedded with 8 diamonds hour index, diamond bezel with 44 diamonds. All these materials, color and designs provide can come up with thousands of different combinations. That drives all Rolex collectors crave for…

These are Rolex Day Date Ref 1803, left in Black White Gold, Stella Red with Diamond Dial with Chinese Day wheel, Black with strip index and creamy matt White dial on the right.

There are quite a number of Day Date collectors in Hong Kong.  They share the same reasons: good fun with minimum amount of money, and attractive return of investment. Yet, a simple 1803 yellow with Champagne gold dial with strip hour index with leather strap that cost about HK$23,000  ten years ago worth HKD$40,000 now. Another example is a platinum Day Date with Stella blue dial set with 8 diamonds, currently worth HKD$260,000 was just HKD$90,000 ten years ago. Rare one could enjoy even higher appreciation over years.

Stella Dial
Rolex made a series of colored dials with a multi-layered lacquer coat in 1970’s referred to as Stella dials,

Stella which means star in Italian, it was a name bestowed only by collectors because they glisten in the light, giving the impression of shining stars of porcelain and there is a certain translucency when you look at it closely. They are also sometimes being called Stellina dials.

In fact Rolex didn’t actually call these Stella dials.  There are many attractive Stellas made on Ref 1803 between 1970-1985 though Rolex did not actually call these Stella Dials.

During that time Rolex produced these colored lacquer dials, they weren’t very popular and not being welcome by the local HK Chinese, as I could recalled I saw a Green Stella for than 6 months in a Rolex shop no one bought it, until one day the Salesman bought it by himself with staff price. Now that Ref 1803 with Stella Red is probably the most sought after Day Date.

Rarity, which is one of the Concern in looking for Vintage
Watch beside, Condition, price and Quality.

In the last 10 years, collectors have revisited the Stella dials, finding them quite beautiful and appealing, accepted as an unisex watch due to the optimum size of 36mm. Many people decorated them with alligator strap of matching colour.

And they have a lot of different dial colour that would work like opium to stimulate you for enlarging your Day Date Collection. Also they are still quite affordable as far as of today, Thought their price has been double for two times in the past 8 years, Such as the Stella Red was just HKD$80,000 in 2007 and now there is no one want to sell you for HKD$160,000!
