Submariner “Hulk” ref 116610LV
The Rolex Submariner’s robust and functional design swiftly
became iconic diving watch. With their subtly redesigned Oyster case, distinctive
dial with Maxi luminescent hour markers, graduated rotatable Cerachrom bezel
and solid link Oyster bracelet, super accurate movement that makes some “tourbillon”
shameful, the latest generation Submariner and Submariner Date are firmly in
line with the original model launched in 1953.
The Rolex Submariner Date reference 116610LV, aka
"Hulk," is the Rolex Submariner we all know and love but with a green
ceramic bezel and green dial. It commands a price premium (SPR HK$68,100) over
the more traditional black ceramic bezel and matching black dial “classic”
Rolex Submariner 116610LN reference model (SPR HK$63,900).
There are always dissenters over the Hulk, over the years, I
love using Hulk though I always hear people, dislikes “Green”, Green is not my
colour, Too green! It is a lady’s watch, no one wears green watch, not a
classic….Someone says’ Like Kermit 16610LV (50th anniversary) more.
At the time, this person was wearing a Rolex with a vintage Submariner
1680 with a ripe patina dial on NATO strap, so they weren’t exactly hostile to
the brand. I believe their reasoning was that in their opinion wearing the
green-dialed Rolex Submariner 116610LV came across to him as though someone was
trying to stand out or be unique!
As much as I love wearing a black Rolex Submariner black, it
doesn’t tell anyone who knows about watches anything about me. A downside of the
most popular ones is that they force you to blend in.
Or, if you want to present something more distinctive about
yourself but don’t want to be “out there,” consider the color green.
Well, I like blue as much as many of the watch makers, so “Blue”
is the standard brand colour, so as blue PP 5711, AP 15400, AP15202, is all
boutique item. Green is Rolex’s iconic colour,
it represents Ocean, its represents caring, environmental friendly, peace and tranquility.
To get a Hulk is nothing easy, I sold Hulk likely about ten
pieces in the past two years. Starting $65,000, price keeps going up to $69,000,
$71,000, $73,000, $74,000, now my next piece is $86,000!
It is not a good news, as price of Hulk from gray dealer is
keeping increasing… that is a sign that it will be one day I cannot afford to
buy one… So it is time for me to keep one for myself first.
Rolex is gold, and gold is not Rolex.
