Rolex Watch Market in China

Rolex SA is a Swiss watchmaking manufacturer of high-quality, luxury wristwatches. Rolex watches are popularly regarded as status symbols in HK and Singapore or country with Chinese Population as the majority!
In 1908, Rolex watches officially registered trademark. The first batch of Rolex watches because it superb technology quality and immediately attention.

For waterproof watch industry is, since 1927 Rolex has been at the top of the position. There is no doubt that “Oyster” series is the most successful luxury watch type. Till now, Submariner is still the Icon watch for divers, outdoor athletes, sportsman you and me.

A Rolex watch in 1914 Kew Observatory get the class A certificate, this is the British issued by the highest Observatory never had such an evaluation. It has gained recognition on its accuracy; this is a world event, Rolex watches gained immense popularity in Europe and the United States.

BusinessWeek magazine ranks Rolex No.71 on its 2007 annual list of the 100 most valuable global brands. Rolex is also the largest single luxury watch brand, producing about 2,500 watches per day,  that is 1M watches a year with estimated revenues of around US$3 billion.

Rolex is one of the watch brands who entered the Chinese market in early liberation days of China. For quite a long period of time, Rolex is the only brand of watch that Chinese people can think of when they wanted to buy luxury watches. Nowadays, Rolex still enjoy the high reputation it gained in those days. But one problem of it marketing in China is that it only possesses limited numbers of exclusive shops in first-tier cities in China. The brand image of Rolex is mostly represented by the Rolex counters in shopping mall, not by the exclusive shops or Rolex Boutique.  The brand image is not well demonstrated yet. Even some of the people will regard those who buy Rolex as upstart with no taste. With the improvement of Chinese customer purchase power, more people in the second-tier and third-tier cities have the demand to buy luxuries.

It has no doubt that Asia became the largest Swiss Rolex Oyster watch consumer market in 2010, more than half of global sales came from Asia (mostly Chinese buyers), and the growth rate was up to 34.6%, easily beating the United States (14.5%) and Europe (10.4%). The pavilion was filled with Mandarin, Cantonese, and many Chinese dialects, you can see Chinese faces everywhere. Chinese has become the No. 1 tourist group to HK, New York and Australia. China has passed the United States for demand of luxury watches for the first time since 2004 and these consumers are not only craving more brands, but specific models of labels.

So if Rolex can work on more on the PR event, advertising campaign and product distribution. It will definite could create more sales in Chinese market. Probably Rolex could consider a Rolex Watch Ambassador. Jet Li, Jacky Chan, Donnie Yeh, Kung Li, Fan Bing Bing, or HK Snob… LOL.. Work through more sales Advertisement through Blogs, Internet promotion, exposure in the China Movie., Like the Rolex appeared in “Die Hard”, the watch who belong of wife of John McClain…is Rolex and that would treble the effect of propaganda by means of traditional Media magazine or posters.

Who is No.1? Rolex or Omega?
Omega has a longer history and influence in China, the great leader Chairman Mao worn an Omega Seamaster, which was a gift from Guo Mo Ruo (郭沫若).  And many Chinese Senior official treat Omega a Class of Watch. And no one seem were wearing Rolex in the 50 and 60s. not until recent ten year more elegant brand from Switzerland are being exposed in news media. Like Wen Jia Bao were wearing a Vacheron Constantin where he visit the Earth Quake affected area in Men Juen.
In terms of Number of Watch, Omega, in terms of Revenue, Similar. The most popular watch model for majority of Chinese in China. Omega , the No. 1 Competitor of Rolex. Right now, the most-searched model is Omega’s Seamaster, followed by Rolex’s Submariner and Daytona models. The demand for the two industry leaders shows that the gap Rolex held over Omega in the previous years is quickly closing in. In 2012, this year’s study revealed the difference in demand between the two brands is by 2.3 % points, against 8.4% in 2009 – mainly explained by Omega gaining market share in China while Rolex reinforced its positioning in the stagnant West. The lead for most-searched watch is held by Rolex at 18.63 %, but Omega is quickly closing the gap with 15.84 %.

The balance of bracelet of your Rolex would be an excuse not to Repair nor service at Rolex Service Centre!

The balance of bracelet when you buy a Rolex from an AD.
Friend of mine, who is a US Movie Actor, he dropped a Tudor and a Rolex off to the Australia Rolex Service Centre last week for service.

They noticed that his watch bracelet is unbalanced.
3 links on one side and 5 on the other!
Both watches has 4 links out.
He bought One from Kowloon watches and one from Ying Wong (Emperor).

Rolex Service Centre asked him to send his spare links in.
They said that they won't service a watch and have it send back unbalanced...
Which lead us to the question that the 2 Rolex AD he brought from have done it the lazy way.
Take all the links out from one side!

This might be a good topic for you especially female.
If there is more than 1 link out, they should insist to take it out from both sides.

Friend of mine he lucky found a Rolex tool and reconnect the links properly before sending to Rolex Service Centre.
This Sound weird to you, but that is True!!
So next time, when there is needed to remove some of the Submariner link for matching your wrist, make it one on each side, don’t remove two on one side!
And Please keep the links, there can be vital to you, and if that is Gold one... don't throw it away as each link may cost you HKD$3,000!!

Rolex Quiz, Can you what metal following watch is made of!?

There is always easy to tell a Rolex is made of Gold (yellow gold or White gold) by their colour, how about can you tell if that is a watch of Platinum or White gold!?

From Left to Right, Ref 18038 Yellow Gold, Centre is White gold Day Date as it has 44 diamonds on the bezel, the one in the right is a Ref 1803 White gold, why we can tell if that is White gold not Platinum, becasue the rectangular diamond is shorther than those on Platinum.

T
This is no question stainless steel watch as this is Date Just , it does not come with Yellow Gold or Platinum.
But the Bezel is made of 18KT white Gold. Yes, there is Yellow gold Date just.

The one on the left is White Gold Day Date ref 18049 because there are 44 diamond on the bezel and the rectangular diamond is shorter than the one show below!
The one in the right is Stainless steel Date Just, (stainless steel only)

This is a Platinum Day Date Ref 18346 becasue there are 46 diamond on the bezel, and also the rectangular diamond at 6 O'clock is longer, can you notice? In Shorter, in later model like Ref 18346, the diamond is longer!
This is a classic , collector's dream watch Rolex Day Date Ref 1804, platinum as it has 46 diamond on the Bezel.

Rolex Ref 1804, Platinum 46 Diamonds

This is a Rolex Day Date Platinum, as it is printed on a 1978 Rolex Catalogue it was stated Platinum, note that there is 46 Diamond on the bezel, Ref 1804.

This is the fun part of Collecting Rolex as there are so many variations, different kind of dial, cases, and moreover a lot of knowledge for us to learn.

PS, I can not be right all the time as there are so many excetional, but here is base on what we learnt over the years.
Correct me if I am wrong!

There are always paradox on what we could see and sometimes all it takes is a bit more time to analyses on the people you meet.

People says the first 7 seconds of interview had made the manager to determine that interviewee is to be hire already by the HR manager.  True!?
Don’t judge too early from his watch on the person’s personality…

There is always real great character with lousy cheap watch and lousy cheap people with Rolex.
I am not trying to say Rolex Is Cheap Watch… it is good watch of good quality.
What I am trying to say is that it is perfect would be a good Quality people who wears good quality Rolex. LOL!

Dick Tracy's Wrist Radio comes into Commerical Products after 67 years, finally!

Warren Beatty as "Dick Tracy' in the 1991 movie
Dick Tracy
The newspaper-comics cop got his smartwatch in 1946. We're still waiting for ours.
After 67 years, we could see this idea was adopted and on Commercial Sales in the shelf.

Samsung SmartWatch
On 4 Sept Samsung SK Shin, appeared in Berlin at the IFA trade show, Samsung showed off one of its worst kept secrets, the Galaxy Gear. Sony also showed off its smart watch, although it's hardly a newcomer to this field; Sony's effort will be the SmartWatch 2, a device it first announced back in June.

Pebble
Smart watches aren't entirely a new concept, but they're something that's been slow to gain traction in recent years. Sony has dabbled with them. Pebble  http://getpebble.com/ made headlines and a lot of seed capital out of a very successful Kickstarter campaign that ultimately led to frustrated backers when Pebble couldn't quite deliver on time. Everyone seemed to agree that the idea was one with merit, but nobody delivered on a really compelling smart watch product.

Next Comers
Alongside Sony and Samsung, rumours swirl around Apple, Google and Microsoft eyeing up this particular space.

Rolex and Swatch
"Finding the right price for smartwatches will be hard. The sweet spot will be similar to designer watches versus Rolex or Swatch," commented Carolina Milanesi, a smartphones analyst at research group Gartner.

Aftermath, It is time for me to prepare some money for buying Samsung Note III, Where Am I going to wear, left hand with a Rolex and Right hand with a SmartWatch? No way!

A very Special Rolex “Submariner Emerald” for Special people, for Who?

Hocus Pocus 1991 Christmas Special Watch

Tony Leung, Wong Kar Wai and Zhang Zi Yi

Jacky Chan, The Submariner Emerald Would be matching you perfectly!

Rolex Submariner Emerald

Many people know they want a Rolex watch but aren't sure what model to get. People check for the people he know for the model they wear, simply follow and get one from Rolex Shop.
There are some peculiar watch like the Hocus Pocus designed by Higashi-Glazer for Swatch in 1991, with numbered not more than 14,999 pieces, It was sold from original price HKD$600 to a unbelievable HKD$12,000 in the next day of Release. Until Today, this is still a special Watch. Why!? Because of the design is so much unique. Look at that!
Some people simply want the name on their wrist and are looking for the least expensive Rolex model., they go Air King.
Other people have a closer connection with a specific model's history, or simply feel that one particular Rolex fits their lifestyle best. Someone has a lot of Submariner, which is Rolex most Popular Model other than Date Just.
There is a lot of variant Vintage Submariner and there are too much for me to learn, too many know-how to choose which one if genuine or what is Fake about it!
Well, to some people who has no concern on the money, and for those who want to have a lot of sands on the watch, for those who would like to have a very special watch to appear in your Daughter marriage. Or wear to show to your boss that you do not need that job for the shameful salary.
Rolex Submariner Ref 116649EM which even could not be found on general Rolex price book.
Released at Baselworld in 2010, this “Submariner Emerald” (ref. 116649EM) was produced in a very limited number. Bezel is set with 36 emeralds and 12 brilliants and this particular example also has the pave diamond dial with emerald indices. A true 18 KT White gold masterpiece and who wonders if dealer has it in stock?
Yes, I saw one in HKIA Rolex AD, just one, and I believe there is no more than this one in the Rolex Boutique in HK.
Make a trip to the HKIA and talk to the Senior Sales Executive for this watch.  They may offer you some discount if you are really need the discount! This is a watch for meeting the Shanghai Rich Celebrity in Shanghai Club! Or for those who should have a special watch that it would have no other one when you wear in Cannes Film festival!
The price is HKD$2,855,000

Of course for those who has a lot of money, and there is nothing to buy, you can consider this, remember this Rolex is made uner very very small quanity.

Aisan Largest Rolex AD Shop at HKIA Departure Hall Atrium, Sold Six GMT master Ref 116710 BLNR in the first Day

HKIA Rolex AD, Asian Largest and Probably the most Challenging Watch Business in Town
Due to the high rent, that I think over HK$3,000,000 a month a few tenth of sales executives.
The Rolex AD in HKIA is likely either a big revenue Generators or big loser to the owner Dickson Watch & Jewellery.
Insiders story was told that in the first Day of Opening, they SOLD 6 Submariner Blue Pointer Ref 116610 BLNR! And a few Daytona Stainless steel, Well? Who are the buyer!? As they have to pass by the immigration and fly away the day!?
And I think there is hardly to get more than 5% discount, or even no discount depending on how much time you have to make a happy Rolex Shopping.
They may have a Million dollars Sales revenue, but that isn’t enough  for them for paying the rent and the staff!
When time comes, we will see how they change their sales strategy,
Don’t  forget, there are limitation to make a Rolex buy there. And I think it takes minimum 20 Minutes to buy a Rolex.
Well., I think if the strategy is Right they can sell a lot of Rolex to the rich Buyers.
How?

Rolex Daytona Ref 116520 White Dial
A lucky Day for friend of Watch Fever who bought the Rolex Daytona Ref 116520 at List price $87,500 yesterday at HKIA Rolex Boutique, at Departure Hall Atrium. Likely this is the FIRST Rolex Daytona few pieces Sold since the Openning on 24 Aug 2013!

This is insofar the hottest Watch In Hong Kong!
In Rolex AD, Ref 116520 stainless steel Daytona with 78590 oyster strap is having a list price of $87,500, Sorry no discount.
That is the original price for Daytona no matter Black or White Dial. However from various Review and watcher's preference, most of the people is looking for Black dial instead of White.
So there is no way to get a Black Dial from Rolex AD, and we need to pay $95,000 to get a Black Dial.
Invoice amount is still $87,500 for Black Dial.
How long we can get the Rolex Daytona? 3 months minimum on the long queue, of course depending on which Rolex AD you are looking for.
And of course, if you are VIP customers, they may cut the queue to give you that watch.
Well, leave you contact in the Rolex AD and start waiting!?

Vanity drives us going for Rolex?

The latest Release Rolex GMT Master II Ref 116710 BLNR

Vanity drives us going for Rolex!?
Vanity can add significant value to a product, and this "Vanity factor" affects the prices of the cars we drive, the wine we drink, the shoes we wear, the pen we write with and of course the WATCH we wear!
To many people, the function of a watch is to tell time — and that's it.
If a watch that costs HKD$100,000 or more, is a terrible investment to this type of consumer.
"How much am I paying?" and "What am I getting for it?" are the two most important questions investors must ask themselves before making such a purchase.
The concept seems simple enough. However, personal views on functionality can greatly skew the value and demand of a product or investment.
A fair amount of research supports the existence the factor of vanity.
For instance, if you were to give two groups of people the same wine, but told one group that their wine was expensive, that group would automatically perceive the wine as tasting better.
But to others, a Rolex is a status symbol that is completely worth the cost. Than is more than Vanity factor for us to buy such a watch.
If you were to ask a random sample of Rolex users to rate their attractiveness, they would give themselves a higher average rating than would owners of any other watch. Likewise, a Rolex user is more likely to identify him as "high-maintenance."
Of course, owning a Rolex doesn't make you vain; it's just that a higher number of vanity-driven consumers have been drawn to the product as a result of its function as a status symbol.

The success and failure of some of the world class Companies and their products: Toyota, Apple, Motorola And Rolex

The success and failure of some of the world class Companies and their products: Toyota, Apple, Motorola And Rolex

Toyota and Lexus
Toyota had built up a very successful product with the application of Taguchi Quality campaign in the 60s and gradually Toyota made itself a very successful company. Name of Toyota represents Good Quality.
“There were a Toyota broke down at the middle of the desert highway and someone from the Toyota was asking the passing-by cars for Help. No car stop to help as they said this is a Robbery plot as Toyota car never fail!” that was a successful TV Advertisement program for Toyota.
1989, Toyota formed another Company, another product line of Lexus.
The first model was LS400, It was successfully as they built an independent Sales and marketing office and position this is a hi end Lexus. And This is not Toyota.

1989 Lexus LS-400, still we can see some of them are running on the Road!

Apple and Pineapple
News and Rumour about the Low cost version of iPhone 5C. (C stands for CHEAP!?)
In Short if Apple wants this iPhone 5C to be successful, they have to be marketed by a separate company name with Pineapple or Durian.  That if they sell by Apple store under Apply marketing campaign, That Apple will follow Motorola and come to end dead end!  I suggest Apply use “Pineapple” as the second product Line! As Apple iPhone has been built up the Phone of Hi technical, exquisite tools as a Class of Hi End Phone. If they sells low end Cheap Phone, that would be walking away from What Steve Jobs had planned back in 28 June 2007, the first day they launched the very First iPhone 2G.

The Apple iPhone 5C?

Motorola Razr II and ULC handphone
In 2005 Motorola planned to make the World SLC headphone, (SLC stands for Super low cost targeted to be selling at USD$20.00 for Indian and Southern America market)
And after when 50 million U.S. Dollars facilities and equipment, marketing team reported that the market of the ULC was actually does not exist for Motorola, and In fact at that time Nokia had had a low cost hand phone which has a B/W LCD display, having all the SMS and basic phone call function, price target was about US$25. Whereas Motorola ULC hand phone was intended to use i-Dot display, with a unique pattern of display that was hardware fixed. And I think they have made less than 5,000 units sending to market like India and Latin America as samples testing the market, but the comment was very negative. The program was dissolved, they found that No one would like to use the Low Cost handphone as the name itself reflect the user is also a “poverty class!” The Only Successful Motorola is early Star Tac II and Razr.

From Left, My Motorola Star Tac II LED display and Star Tac II LCD, Note II LTE, HTC One... Star TAC II was selling HKD$14,800 in 1991

Rolex and Tudor
Unveiled in 1946 by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, the Tudor collection was originally branded with a shield that contained a decorative rose, a symbol of the English Tudor dynasty. The Tudor Oyster Prince as the first Tudor First model, boasted waterproof cases and self-winding movements, and the line was cast as the more rough-and-tumble member of the Rolex family, with advertisements showing men in extreme sport or work scenarios. However, Tudor is living in the shadow of Rolex for years and was not proved successful, or I should say Rolex is too successful comparing with Tudor.
Priced as one third of Rolex, Tudor earned a name of “poor people’s Rolex in 80s Hong Kong!’ and most of us would buy Rolex as the second, after they got the Tudor, such as Dutch friend Hens hanged banner on his Volkswagen Beetle “My Second car is Porsche!”
Tudor timepieces are produced alongside Rolex watches in Switzerland, but they're assembled with more affordable ETA Swiss watch movements rather than the movements made in-house at Rolex.
In 1989, Tudor has been spinoff as Tudor not using Rolex’s case, Crown, and Strap. So it is building up its unique image, and recently you can see that they are totally new bleed of watch with Bold and sleek design not as conserved as Rolex design.
So the new marketing strategy of Tudor is Right, they have own marketing plan, product line that is out of the Box of Rolex design.  Different line, different branding, different direction, Both Rolex and Tudor would be successful.
