Let’s go green – HK Snob’s “Green” recommendations

As more and more of us call on going green, we, HKWF, also promote the “Going Green” campaign. We, HKWF, mean the color green. Let’s take a look at which green dial watches HK Snob approves.

1.      The Rolex Day-Date 40, Day-Date 36 green dial

The new 2016 Day-Date 40 olive dial is a marvel to wear and to look at. Offered in both white gold and rose gold, this DD40 is a must-have item. Just like the green Submariner, this DD40 is an anniversary model. We do recommend the rose gold version as the green dial complements rose gold better than white gold. Worn on the super shiny President bracelet, the dial has 3-dimensional roman numerals which add shine to the watch.

However, if you would like to have the Day-date at a more traditional and dressier size, the 118138 green is an equally good choice. The yellow gold DD is offered with a matching alligator strap. Worth noting is that the DD40 has a newer movement which offers 72 hours of power reserve.

2.    Rolex 116508 Green Daytona

Not a fan of the Day-Date? Not a problem. Here we have the 2016 new Rolex 116508 yellow gold Daytona in green. The dial has a sharper green color than the DD40’s green dial. The dial is accented by the red sub-dial rings and the red color at its hour markers.

If you would like to have only one Rolex in your life, this is the watch. It is also a perfect choice for you to upgrade your collection. The new Daytona 116508 is now accurate to +2/-2 seconds per day with the new Rolex standard. The tachymeter scale on the bezel has also been updated.

3.      Rolex 116610LV

If gold is not quite your taste, we can always go back to steel.
The Rolex 116610LV is your choice if you want to look sharp
without being too showy.

We all know that the Submariner is a very iconic watch. However, the black Submariner is too often seen in the street. The green 116610LV adds not only color but a lot of fun to the Submariner. The watch looks vivid and sharp. The color of the dial changes from jade to almost dark green under different lighting.

4.      Rolex 116718 GMT Master II Green dial

This is the ultimate GMT watch for many. The combination of yellow gold and a green dial is still impeccable. The dial completely steals the spotlight. The more ordinary version in black dial is a good choice if you prefer darker colors.

Ellen Degeneres and Mark Wahlberg also wear a green dial 116718.

Can you sport two watches at a time? – HK Snob weighs in

You never really see this often – a man in suit wearing a white dial Daytona 116520 on his right wrist and a GMT Master II 116710 on his left wrist. What is the deal with wearing two Rolex watches at a time?

The GMT way of wearing a GMT?

The first explanation (or do we need one?) is that the man has to track the time of two places. This can actually be done with a GMT watch. However, he might also need to time his travel or something with the Daytona at the same time. By that it means he is an extremely important and busy person who has to time something while tracking time of 3-4 places (GMT Master II allows you to track the time of up to three places).

Prominent people who wears two watches at a time.
HK Snob

The late Hunter S Thompson

Mr. Hunter S Thompson literally invented Gonzo Journalism and he used to wear his trademark GMT Coke with a Tag Heuer.

Mr. Fidel Castro also wore two Rolexes at a time. One is a Day-Date and the other one is a Submariner. In the picture above he was in The Kremlin having a meeting with Khruschev.

Maradona constantly wears two Hublot watches on both wrists.

And recently wearing two Rolex Daytona Ref 116520LN White.

Everyone can choose to wear two watches at a time. You can also choose to wear three or four watches at a time. When you have too many watches and too few occasions to wear them, you can wear them all at a time. Wearing a GMT Master with any other watches is a bad idea because you can already track the time of three places on the GMT Master.

Wearing a Daytona with another Daytona shows that you are a rich man who wants to time everything precisely with your double chronograph gear. Wearing two DEEP SEA means that you are a guy who works out a lot.

There are different combinations. However, you really have to be as outstanding a person as Fidel Castro to be said to be cool wearing two watches or more at a time. If you are not as prominent as he is, you may be said to be showing off your poor collection.

Nevertheless, it is a different story if you are a watch dealer. You might want to show your clients how the watch looks on your wrists. Meanwhile, it is not recommended to wear two watches at a time unless you want to have them both stolen when something bad happens.

This could be the Pulitzer prize winner of the year for Watch

When you see people wearing two watches , please don't be surprise... as if there is such a need for people does not carry a GMT Master, he might have to carry a GMT Master II on the left hand adjusted to the HK local time, and a Daytona Ref 116500LN on the right hand adjusted to Tokyo time...

This is a picture taken by one of the HKWF members 9ary ( the Wing Chun teacher black belt) in MTR Hong Kong.

The handsome man in suit is wearing two Rolex whilst browsing on a smart phone, whereas the most irony part of the picture is the man standing in front has no Right hand for watch....

Is this world fair?

Well, I am not trying to say anything about people who lost one hand, and most of the time, if I were the owner of the company, I would like to give more priority in promotion to those people who is not perfect physically, but 100% working better than we are...

the Moral of the story: It is expensive to buy, but Cheap to use!

After 25 years, what would be the value of these stuff!?

From left to right: Rolex Explorer I Ref 14270, I bought three watches in Singapore people's Plaza back in 1996 with HK$14,000 each,

Rolex Day Date Ref 18039 white gold, that was sold at $130,000.

Explorer II Ref 16570 was only $19,500, whereas the Louis Vuitton was $1,900.

What is the current market value after 25 years?
well,
The Explorer I is $32,000
The Day Date is $115,000
The Explorer II is $34,000
The Louis Vuitton is selling $1,500 ( at Brand Off)

The Moral of the message is:-

They are Expensive to buy, but cheap to use!

Which discontinued Rolex models should you buy? HK Snob weighs in

We all know that discontinued Rolex watches are like blue-chip stocks. You almost always make money from them after a period of time. Even if you do not make a profit, you do not lose. Except for common vintage models like the 1680, 1665,5513 and the Paul Newman Daytona, there are a few other choices for you to purchase discontinued Rolex models.

1.      Rolex 116520 Daytona

The recently discontinued legendary 116520 Daytona is one
of the best investment items. Priced at $90000 HKD, before
the 116500LN was released, the 116520 could be had at
around $94000HKD for the black dial version and around
$86000 HKD for the white dial versions. Some grey dealers
may offer even better prices. However, just like all the
discontinued Daytona references, the price of the 116520
has been soaring after the 116500LN Daytona Ceramic was
released. We expect that the price of the 116520 will only go
up in the future especially for NOS watches.

2.      Rolex 16610LV

Since the release of the 116610LV “HULK”, the 16610LV 50th anniversary edition has been one of the hot items on the market. The price has been going up as the watch features very different aesthetics than the new 116610LV. The green aluminum insert features a different kind of green than the “HULK” while the dial is black in color with oversized hour markers. A NOS 16610lv now retails at around 80k HKD while it used to retail at around 60k HKD when it was in production.

3.      Rolex 16710 Pepsi

Rolex released the white gold GMT Pepsi a few years ago. However, you have to pay well over 200k HKD to get one. Therefore, a lot of people turn their eyes on the way cheaper Rolex 16710 Pepsi. It features similar aesthetics with the white gold Pepsi GMT with ceramic red-blue bezel. A NOS 16710 Pepsi can be very expensive up to HKD$100,000 or more as prices are expected to go up in the future.

Watches you can wear when doing sports

The Olympic Games are well under way. Let’s take a look at our recommendations of watches to wear when doing sports and take a look at prominent sportsmen who wear their watches while competing.

1.      The Rolex Deep Sea 116660

Both Tiger Woods and David Beckham have been spotted wearing the Rolex Deep Sea. They are two of the most prominent sportsmen in the modern world. With this 3900m diver, you can wear it while doing any kind of sports, be it diving, hiking or golfing. It is not rare to see people wearing the Deep Sea in the gym as well. For some of us, wearing it is already a kind of workout due to its weight. Just make sure you do not bang your beloved watch onto anything when swinging your racket or lifting weights.

2.      The Audemars PIguet Royal Oak Offshore

Worrying about what watches to wear when playing tennis? You might want to follow world no.1 Novak Djokovic and Swiss player Stan Wawrinka. Both of them have been spotted wearing Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore watches. Novak was spotted wearing the Offshore Diver and Stan was spotted playing with his Royal Oak Offshore Diver Chronograph and Royal Oak Offshore Ceramic Diver. These Royal Oak Offshores can obviously take the shock and are tough enough to be your partners when doing your favorite sports.

3.      The Roger Federer Rolex Collection

The great Roger Federer has a steel Datejust II, a platinum Day-Date II and a vintage 6263 Daytona Paul Newman. He has been spotted wearing a Day-Date II in rose gold in the award ceremony. Out of the three Rolex watches in Roger Federer’s collection, the Datejust II seems to be the best watch for you to wear when doing sports. The platinum Day-Date II is too heavy while the 6263 Daytona is too precious.
4.      The G-Shock Mudmaster

Going outdoors? Climbing mountains and conquering
swamps? The G-Shock Mudmaster is there for you. Specially
designed to prevent any mud from going into the watch, the
Mudmaster is your reliable partner when going outdoors for
any sport activities. With a huge case and led light, it is a
very catchy timepiece that time your epic journey through the
bumpy road.

What make the crown stand out?

When we talk about watches, we always talk about Rolex. When we talk about Rolex, we always talk about…errr… the Submariner? the Daytona? Or… the Day-Date?

Have you wondered why Rolex has been so successful all over the world? HK Snob weighs in.

1.      Price
In Hong Kong, Rolex stainless steel watches are around 30k-90k. It means a stainless steel Rolex is never over 100k HKD (now it may be different with the new Daytona). That has been the case for many years.

A Rolex is a symbol of status in Hong Kong and many of us do not mind buying a symbol of status under 100k HKD. It is a mental trick. Rolex understands how big the amount of money we are willing to spend on their watches.

2.      Iconic design
Be it a Submariner, a Daytona or a Datejust, we can always recognize a Rolex easily. When worn on the wrist, you are wearing something that you know others will envy. There are so many iconic designs in the Rolex collection. Each of them has its own features and character.

This successfully makes people want to buy more and more after they own their first Rolex. Of course, movie stars wearing Rolex watches contribute a lot to its success, too.

3.      Practicality
Every Rolex is tough. Every Rolex movement is an unbeatable workhorse. Yes. This is the image of Rolex – its being super practical.

Although you may not dive with your Submariner or check the other city’s time with your GMT Master, these watches are made with practical function and outstanding durability.

You seldom hear that a Rolex is not accurate or it breaks down easily. Each Rolex watch has its own practical function. It has nothing excessive. The image of each Rolex model is so clear that laymen understand easily.
