Rolex Day Date of fancy colour as some of the rich man toys

The Collection of one of the HK Rolex Collectors

This is one of the many boxes of one of the HK Rolex Serious Collectors, he is really a kind of man that would like to pursuit of good stuff as his new toys, he can buy two Vintage Rolex a Day, where I am still scratching my head and checking my bank account for the one I love,, and next day someone told me ; Sorry, that Rolex was sold!
Of course I am just a trivial nothing at all in terms of number of collection or amount of collection.

There are a lot of people who has over 500 Submariners  and there are some people who has over 1,000 Rolex , that is a class of Collector, and I am not.

I spend wisely as mainly I have little budget.  As beside Watch, I collect Pen, Vinyl, Tubes and lovely little men accessories like Cuff link and tie clip of the olden times,
I am a blogger which I find fun and friends, I study about Rolex and I find that I know nothing about Rolex, but that is the Fun!

When you are young, and when you are affordable, try to buy something you like and that would not cause you too much… what is that, not a Car, not a branded cloth nor shoes from Italy, it about a piece of good watch like Rolex that you can use it, abuse it, dip it into water casually whilst washing hands, and tiny Scratches as good memories as you do up mountain climbing, but do not worry, it wouldn’t lose it glory as it is a Rolex.

New Old Stock Rolex Day Date Ref 18248

This is the one I am sure many people may like for its simplicity dial design. The dial is made of Onxy, finely lapped into a thickness of 0.25mm. Then cut the two windows for "Date" and "Day" display using laser? Well, even though the yield of making the dial sucessful is less than 30% I think. it may take also at least two to three days to make one dial. So there is very few Rolex watch come with this special material as for the dial.  Still you can find a few new models do comes with this material. But the number is very small. This is one of the favourite of Rolex Day Date, but the price is high, The Croco Strap is big, thick and beautiful too.

Rolex Day Date Stella Series Red Dial with Chinese Character

Rolex has produced a lot of beautiful Day Date model since 1956, knowing that a lot of collectors in the world eventually go to collect Day Date as one of their expenisve bad habbit after the Submariner, Daytona, Explorer, GMT Master, DeepSea, Datejust, Yachtmaster collection.

Why? because there are a lot of colour, various kinds of material for dial like Gem, mineral, stone, wood, fossil, silk screen lacque printing, coat of arms, stampped Rolex pattern, Different type of date such as Arabian, Thai or Chinese language, decoration by diamond on dial, on bezel, on case for your collection… it makes me crazy…and this is hard to collect all possible colour and dial combination, even though you have that kind of money and time…

Attached two one in Red and one in light blue is my dream Day Date…I have begged the owner to sell me the one in Red! The dial was hand made in Italy!
He was not willing to sell unless he has found another one….Oh! that May take years!

Rolex Flagship Model Day Date Ref 6611

The Day Date became Rolex's flagship. The first model (6511) lasted just over a year before it was replaced by the externally identical 6611 with caliber 1055 movement with its free sprung Micro-Stella balance and was the first to be labeled "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. This new accuracy standard guaranteed the watch to remain within + 3.0 seconds per day. This is the official birth of the Rolex Legend model Day Date… I have been longing to see one.

Today, I can have one in my hand, it is original Ref 6611. The Rolex Day Date, the fluted bezel has a finer pitch, the hour Marks is a thick piece of wedge shaped sold gold set on the dial, there is “"Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial at the six o’clock position.

This model has been released for about two years only, there should not too many example of good condition Ref 6611. In 1959 caliber 1055 was replaced with caliber 1555 in model 1803 (18,000bph) and later In 1965 - model 1803 received caliber 1556 (19,800bph). In 1977 caliber 3055 (quick-set) was introduced in model 18038.

In 1988 caliber 3155 (double quick-set) was introduced in model 18238.
Caliber 3155 is the caliber still used today in all Day-Date models.

History of Rolex's Flag Ship: Date Day

The Rolex Day Date across the world has become synonymous with class, taste and style. This watch remains one of the most prestigious additions a man can have to his wardrobe.

The Birth of Date Day
The 6511 the "Day Date" had a window at 12 spelling out the day at 12 and the date was shown at 3. Patented July 23. 1955 - officially Released in 1956 after Rolex had been enjoying quite a barren spell in the sale of its complicated timepieces it soon began to revive fortune..

President Bracelet
An additional day and date discs and a screw down back it was a very large and thick watch which gave it presence on the wrist. Due to the complexity of the watch, with its automatic movement,. Introduced as a niche model it soon gained the popularity it deserved and after the introduction of the concealed clasp (concealed clasp was offer as $75 option in 1969) it was known as the "President".

Flag Ship Model
The Day Date became Rolex's flagship. The first model (6511) lasted just over a year before it was replaced by the externally identical 6611 with caliber 1055 movement with its free sprung Micro-Stella balance and was the first to be labeled "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial. This new accuracy standard guaranteed the watch to remain within + 3.0 seconds per day.
Date Day Caliber
In 1959 caliber 1055 was replaced with caliber 1555 in model 1803 (18,000bph) and later In 1965 - model 1803 received caliber 1556 (19,800bph).
In 1977 caliber 3055 (quick-set) was introduced in model 18038.
In 1988 caliber 3155 (double quick-set) was introduced in model 18238.
Caliber 3155 is the caliber still used today in all Day-Date models.

President Watch
The Day Date earned the nickname the "President" when Rolex reportedly gave one to the then President of the United States Dwight Eisenhower. Some sources say that President Eisenhower was actually given a Date Just with the presidential bracelet. But it is a fact that several other US presidents are known to wear Day-Date (Roosevelt, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, but seems Clinton, Bush and Obama does not wear Rolex Date Day, that may indicate that the recent US President has lost their glory on the wrist than in the past! (Clinton had a Roger Dubuis Muchmore, George Bush Worn a Cheap Electronics Digital watch and Obama has a few including a Tag Huer.)

Shape of the Date Day
These early models appeared rather bulky. In their never ending quest to modernize the basic configuration of the Day Date, Rolex have changed from the bulbous bubbleback look of the early models to the slender shape employed today.
With only a few mild case design changes over the year the first modification to the Day Date was the addition of the hack feature in about 1972. This allowed the second hand to be stopped dead if you wanted to set the time via a preset accurate source.

Material for Date Day
The Day Date was available in white gold, yellow gold, pink gold and platinum although in early 70's the pink gold watch was fazed out. If you had a Date Day in stainless steel, that is a prototype and that can be a great treasure in Auction.

Quick Set
The "Quick set" feature (caliber 3055) solved one of the watches biggest problems. Introduced in the late 1970's Quick set was introduced to all Rolex models by 1983. Instead of turning the crown round and round to change the day the wearer could just pull the button out half way and a few turns at most and the correct date was displayed.

Sapphire Crystal
The introduction of the quick set feature also coincided with other developments for the Day Date. The inclusion of the sapphire crystal not only gave the watch a sleeker look but also added to the durability of the watch. Introduced in 1977, the sapphire crystal fitted tighter than the plastic glass employed before and rendered the watch glass scratch proof near enough. The early Day Date models were waterproof to 165 feet (50 meters) while the current model is safe at depths of up to 100 meters. At the same time the current model is much slimmer.

Double Quick Set
Introduced in 1988/89 was the "Double Quick Set" watch with caliber 3155. This was model 18238 and it made the setting of the Day and Date even easier as they could both be done on the button. Rolex has also increasingly expanded their "Crown Collection" to include all types of precious stones by now although they were available with diamonds on the bezel from their introduction.

Pink Gold Date Day
From the end of 2000 the Day Date has been available in pink gold again. The watch has also been introduced with slightly redesigned case with polished lugs, smooth bezel is now domed, a domed sapphire crystal, solid center links on now heavier bracelet and can also come on an oyster bracelet to bring it in line with many of their other models.

Rolex Ref. 1803 White Gold Brown Dial

A Fine and Very Rare ROLEX Ref.1803 18K White-Gold case & Bracelet. Brown colour Dial with Diamonds-set numbers. Ref. 1803 is one of my Favourite Rolex Date Day as they have the classical history. The Movement is a bit thinner than the latest revision. At that time 1956-1976, a Rolex Day Date is as expensive as a compact Japanese Car. Not easy for most of grass root people like my father to afford to buy. So the number of unit with Excellent condition left is little, with special Colour dial is even less. This watch is estimated as HKD$120,000. As simply, the colour is beautiful and the unit is un-polished at all.

Rolex DD PT Ref 118209.

In the beginning, the oyster bezel fluting has a functional purpose, it served to screw the bezel on the case, helping to ensure the waterproofness of the Oyster Watch, and It has the same fluting design and dimension at the base of the case. It has to be operated by specific Rolex Oyster Tool. The Bezel evolved over time and later would be friction fitted onto the crystal and the case. The Fluting because an aesthetic element, a genuine Rolex Signature feature. A mark of distinction that is only available on Yellow Gold, EverRose, and White Gold Day Date watch. So this bare bezel is what… Well this is the Rolex Most Expensive version of Day Date: Platinum Watch , it does not come with any Fluted Bezel at all. The Picture shown here is a down to the Earth Ultra Low Profile Rolex Oyster Watch. Most os the people does not know that this is a Top Flagshp watch of Rolex., as they think this is a Cheap version of Stainless Steel watch that is having no Fluted Bezel for Cost Control.
In fact this is a watch of HKD$400,000.00!

Ps
For those Stainless steel Oyster Date Justs, the Bezel is made of 18Kt White gold, and most of the people thought that is Stainless steel.

Rolex Ref. 1803 Day Date Ferrari Red

I believe that there is less than handful of people who has enough money of HKD6,900 in the 70s and at the same time appreciate such kind of colour of RED. So by today, this is likely the most difficult to find RED DD of Ref. 1803.
This is definitely one of the rarest Rolex Day Date Ref. 1803 as the Dial Ferrari Red! I have been walking through many of the Singapore watch Shops last week with help of Uncle Jack, and almost all the shops in Macao and HK. I could not find out one. The owner of this watch is not me, he is Paul. Paul has been collecting watch for 25 years, I am waiting for him to sell this to me, but that must cost me a big fortune. It comes with Original bracelet, the previous owner is a 77 Years old man who had owned this watch for 20 years, he sold this to Paul two weeks ago. The watch color is rare, same as the Daytona Red, which was the world RECORD for US$170,600.00 in 2004.
