Choosing the right dial for your Daytona

For years, the Rolex Daytona black dial has been the more sought-after version than the white dial. However, things have seemingly changed for the new 116500ln Daytona Ceramic.

Most Hongkongers preferred to buy the black dial version of the 116520 as it is a safer choice than the white dial version. However, is it really true?

A black dial chronograph has an inborn weakness – its legibility. Any watch with sub-dials is more legible in while dial than in black dial. The Daytona is no exception. Although the black dial gives the Daytona a stronger character, it also looks more dull and boring.

The while dial, on the other hand, is not only more legible, it is also more classy. On the new 116500ln, the white dial seems to be a wiser choice as the dial color contrasts very sharply with the ceramic bezel and the sub-dial rings. The black dial version is not too bad as the silver sub-dial rings look very sharp. However, with the black ceramic ring, there is not much contrast in colors. The whole tone is too dark.

The choice for a right dial for your Daytona can be even more of an issue if you are looking for a yellow gold or rose gold Daytona. The 116505 rose gold Daytona matches the ivory dial best as it provides an elegant look with great legibility.

If you are looking for a yellow gold Daytona, make sure you do not miss this year’s new release 116508 with a dark forest green dial. It will be surely a stunner in the metal.

Affordable versions of the Paul Newman Daytona?

Affordable versions of the Paul Newman Daytona?

Omega may be your answer.

At HKWF, we at times recommend affordable versions of watches that carry super high prices.

In this first episode, we would like to talk about the Paul Newman Daytona 6263.

A Rolex Daytona 6263 “Paul Newman” can easily cost you over 300k to 900k HKD. It is one of the most desirable watches at auctions. The panda dial on the 6263 is one of the signatures of the so called “Paul Newman” dial with three black sub-dials on a while dial.

If you are looking for a watch with similar aesthetics, the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch First Omega in Space may be your answer.

The name of the watch is quite long. At 39.7mm, the rose gold version is a numbered edition, meaning that it is not in limited production. The case is made of what Omega calls Sedna Gold. The panda dial looks terrific and its design is said to be inspired by a watch worn by astronaut Wally Shirra in 1962 during the NASA Sigma 7 mission.

The black ceramic tachymeter bezel complements very well with the panda dial in which an outer black ring surrounds the white dial on which three black sub-dials sit.
It does remind you of the Rolex 6263 doesn’t it? The movement inside is the manual-wound 1861 movement. The watch has a domed sapphire crystal. The rose gold version retails at around 130k HKD and HKWF offers you a good discount on this watch.

If paying over 100k for an Omega bothers you, let’s take a look at the stainless steel version, the Omega Speedmaster CK2998 Limited Edition watch.

This is the stainless steel version which basically retains all of the characteristics of the rose gold version. This watch will be produced in 2998 pieces. The bezel, the sub-dials and the chapter ring are all blue in color. The central chronograph second hand is now a lollipop hand. The bezel is in polished blue ceramic and the blue crocodile strap completes the looks.

The 2016 new release will retail at around 40k HKD. A bargain isn’t it? Given how nice looking the whole package is.
Sometimes we can have our own fun without paying a premium for mega watches. These two Omegas will give at least half the fun as the Paul Newman Daytona but at much lower prices.

The latest Price information on Rolex Daytona in HK Ad and parallel import.

Rolex Daytona Stainless Steel Ref 116520 in Black

The Rolex Dayton has been very popular among watch enthusiasts for the past two decades, or even more. When a person is asked of which Rolex to buy, the answer is often the Daytona. I myself plan to get a white dial 116520 this year so I am still trying to understand why this model has been so popular.

As Rolex’s only chronograph, the Daytona has enjoyed its fame for a long time. I did not choose the Daytona for my past several purchases because I was not very fond of it for a few reasons.

First, it is too small. I have got over this point now. I should put it like this: I thought it was too small for my wrist. At 40mm wide, the Daytona looks smaller than other 40mm watches because the bezel is wide (or thick). It leaves a smaller dial which contains three smaller sub-dials. It looks busy to me.

Second, the Daytona is TOO popular. When I walked on the street and I see someone wear a Daytona, I would think that the person was trying to show his wealth. It was way too high-profile to me. The Daytona is just another Rolex. However, all the hype has made it a very sought-after piece which retails over its list price. Sometimes, you can see sales wearing it. Sometimes, I feel that the watch’s popularity is over the line. Although wearing a Rolex is often a high-profile thing, wearing the Daytona is even more so. It gives a statement: I AM RICH AND I CAN AFFORD A DAYTONA!

Third, it was hard to convince myself to pay a premium for a stainless steel chronograph. Put simply, the Daytona did not make me feel excited or special. It is just another chronograph. It is not especially well-designed, but you have to pay a premium over the list price for it.

So, why do I still plan to get one?

I just want to tick the box. The Daytona has a high status in the Rolex collection. With other sports watches upgraded to super cases which lack beautiful case curves, the Daytona remains elegant. The curves of the case are beautifully shaped. The whole watch is shiny. The case size is just about right. The white dial makes it perfect for either sporty occasions or dressier occasions. It is a very eye-catching watch.

And most importantly, it is now less popular than before.

Postscript by HK Snob
This is purely the personal comment of one Rolex Lover about Daytona.

Somehow I feel the same that there are too many Daytona Black in the street, amongst those Galleria Cosmetics sales ladies, I have seen three Daytona in the main shop at Canton Road. The reason why is they are one of the best to retain money as a Watch.

They are super durable, they are too certain extent “Quite Beautiful!” and of course they are iconic watch of Rolex. But as I just talked to one Philippine Collector, why not I top up ten thousand dollars more to get a two tone Daytona?

Well, as you might know I would say that there is drawback on Daytona.

1.  No Date, as I need to tell the date on my wrist for work.

2.  There are really too many in Hong Kong…

3.  It is in Steel, and I think I would use the same money to buy a Yellow gold Day Date or even White gold 1803.

Rolex Daytona Two Tone Blue Arab Ref 116523

So my last Daytona was actually a yellow gold Two Tone 16523 with Diamond Dial, I sold to someone with HKD$42,000… that was 1992. Since then I only bought Rolex Day Date.

HK AD Price information (MRSP in HKD)

Ref 116523 Daytona Two Tone Yellow Gold and steel is HK$124,100

Ref 116523G Daytona with Tihintian dial and diamond HK$157,500

Stock and discount
In general, the Daytona black is still very difficult to get at AD with the above mentioned price.

Where as Two tone, you may get less 5% discount using card in Hong Kong, except you have connection or VIP buyer.

Parallel Import
Ref 116520 Daytona White HK$86,500 -87,500

Ref 116520 Daytona Black HK$89,500 to $91,500

Ref 116523 Daytona Two Tone Yellow Gold and steel is HK$90,500 to HK$100,500

Ref 116523G Daytona with Tahintian dial and diamond HK$123,000 to 128,000.

As for gray dealer, they used to have stock on it except the Tahintian which has to be ordered.

Rolex Daytona Two Tone Tahintian MOP Ref 116523G

have found that Philippine client tends to buy Two Tone Daytona and the Tahintian MOP Diamond more than stainless steel as I believe this is more Charming comparing with plain steel version.

Kathy's Rolex Daytona in 18KT Yellow Gold Ref 116528

Kathy the Ambassador appeared at IFC L'occitane yesterday... for promotion...Being one of her secret admirers....and I used to look at her long leg first and then her smile that that does make your coffee sweetened automatically, but this time, my eyes were caught by her Watch... “A Gold Daytona”

This Queen of the goddess stands at 175cm which is about 12 inches taller than I!

Though, I don't know what word is best to tell about her, I was fascinated by both she and her watch…

This is the Daytona I love too, no matters for men or women... It is gorgeous!

This is one of the Perfect of All Powerful Rolex Factors:

Sportive, Ceramic Bezel, 40mm, Colour and Contrast and Four Seasons watch.

Her watch looks like Ref 116528 Daytona in yellow gold MSRP HK$262,000

Rolex Daytona Ref 116505 2015

The one I like also, Ref 116505 Daytona Pink Gold with Ceramic Bezel, MSRP HK$269,300

Rolex Daytona already exists with ceramic bezels. The first one introduced in 2011 was the Pink Gold ‘Everose’ edition but on a leather strap and with a chocolate brown dial.

If you get by parallel import the price of Ref 116505 is about HKD$200,600.

4/18/201183200
7/4/201187500
8/18/201490000

Refer to the above table that states the Rolex AD MSRP price of Daytona Ref 16520

I ploted a chart to tell how does it run over these years... as below

What is the best investment for the past 35 years in HK!??
A house like Mei Fu Shun Chuen, that was about $30,000 in 1968 and about $250,000 in 1980 and now is $9,880,000 per unit.
1980 to 20156 appreciatioon factor is about 40 times.

Whereas if you bought that Rolex Daytona Steel Ref15620 in 1980, your cost was HK$3,725.

If you don't use it, keep all Full Set until now, Minimum you can sell as good as HK$98,000 (selling price of Such new Ref 116520 Daytona in Rolex AD) your minimum profit gain is $94,275.
Appreciation factor is 98000/3725=26.3 times.

But who know if you put it in Auction, since it is still mint condition, you may go for an Auction of $200,000 (my rough estimation), that is a higher gain factor (53) than Mei Foo Sun Chuen !!

The Ultimate Journey out to the Space!

When one was about to ask his wife to give me money to buy a preowned Ferrari 360 yellow with just 36,000KM. with HKD$650,000!, Friend of mine told him his mate had just changed a new Lambor Aventator, he showed the picture on his Iphone4, well, It was a fantastic car, of course, no question about it! How about a Pagani Huayra….

It could not be coming into an end as there are new model of Human’s most expensive Toy for people who like SPEED every years on road.

Whatever car you are driving could not possible be comparable to the experience to be on Virgin Galactic flight into the space.  It could blow off 100,000 litres of fuel to move up high enough to get rid of the Earth’s Gravitational force and spin you out the space with an acceleration of 15G.

Imagine that could be once in life time experience and not too many people could afford to pay for the ticket… I cannot. Not been the ticket going to New Mexico’s departure station in economy class.

I just thought to myself what is the best watch the passenger should wear?

GMT MASTER II? I think that is no use as we don't know how we should set the 2nd time zone!

Submariner? Day Date? No, I think only one watch a Daytona as you can measure only the flying time and it may be the only watch that it still could be function normally after the Flight….

Oh HK Snob, dream on…

"The Plum is Sour becaue I don't have it!"...someone said...

Rolex Daytona top One Watch for long term value Recommended by Quark Watch Japan.

I was unable to capture this Rolex Daytona White when I was too much focused on the Black the other day.
This is in fact the Third to Daytona Black in all Listed watch Model of Rolex.

Refer to the Catalogue attached.
Daytona Black has a 12 Years guarantee value of +22.7% and 3 years for 19.8%

Whereas the White has a 12.6% for 12 years and 9.7% for 3 years which is not bad at all being a Commercial available Watch in the market, comparable o the GMT master II Black Blue ref 116710BLNR.

But don’t forget that the Black is overpriced in HK, no one could buy one with list price $87,500

At least you have to pay an extra of $6,500, that is about 7.4% of the watch List price, if that amount is offset into the three years guaranteed value, the net gain of Black is just 12.4%.
So when you see Daytona White, go buy it…

Now there is known one piece at one of the Rolex AD shops. I can hold it for two days for supporter of HK Watch Fever, WhatsApp me , First Come First Serve!

The Daytona is already assigned with a customer as of this morning 1 June 2024.

More About Price of Daytona Stainless Steel
Well, I had a chance to get two brand new Rolex Daytona Stainless steel black and one white dial watches at same time in one Rolex AD since last Saturday and I had hold it for 4 days up to this moment.
