Robin Williams died on Monday 11 August at home.

When I landed Manila this morning, just had a chance to pick up tis news!

I am sad as Robin is one of my favourite actors, I still remember I watch the movie Good Morning Vietnam (1987)  and the later one The Bicentennial Man (1999).

These are two Robin’s movies I cannot forget, the first one is comedy with a finale episode of those Bombing Saigoon killing famers, civilians at same time Louis Armstrong Sings “What a Beautiful World”…very touching.  I am sure this sentimental scene make more people knows about this fabulous song of Louis Armstrong. The picture was mostly shot in Bangkok instead of Vietnam, ranked 4^th highest grossing film in 1987. Chintara Sukapatana is very pretty in the Movie!
Similarly the beautiful song also appears in the last two minutes of the movie "Madeline".

As for the Bicentennial man, the story was touching as if you see you beloved one getting old and died in your arms… That keep telling us to pay attention to those who you love, care for your friends and relatives.

Robin dies at age of 63, this is a loss of those who loves him.

What material is being used on a Rolex Day Date?

From someone saying whatever you can see on the Rolex Day Date is Gold

Meaning that say for a Rolex 1803, the case is Yellow 18KT old, The bracelet, the watch locking pins, the screws, the hour index, hour, minutes and second pointers is also made with 18KT yellow Gold

How about a 18049 White Gold Day Day?

Meaning that say the case is 18KT white gold, the bracelet, the watch locking pins, the screws, the hour index, hour, minute and second pointers is also made with 18KT white Gold.

How about a Platinum 118206 Day Date?

The case is 950 Platinum, the bracelet, the watch locking pins, the screws, the hour index, hour, minutes and second pointers is also made with platinum.

Someone has commented that even from Rolex Dealer saying that only 18 KT White Gold is being used on the hour, Minute and second pointers, not Platinum!

I need an Answer as there is no way for me to check unless I take such an Expensive Watch to the lab and use EDAX to check the material… Ref 118206 is listed at HKD$430,000!

shops which has made unlawful deals

HK has been a shopping paradise since 80’s I am sure with the developing of adjacent cities like Singapore, Seoul, K.L, Bangkok, Hong Kong’s would still be the top shopping centre for locals and foreigners?

Yes, by right it is, as Hong Kong is still a tax free port, Not VAT, No Purchase tax, No tax on watches, Red wine.

After HK Dollar was pegged with US dollar in 1983, the value of Hong Kong is no longer amongst the highest in Asia, I used to get One SGD for 1.9HKD in 1982, now One Singapore Dollar is 6.2 HK Dollars!

I used to get 120RMB with 100 HKD, now 100 HKD can get as much as 80 RMB, our money is low which is good for export and shopping.

There are bad deals, crooks and cheats in Hong Kong, though that was only a very numbers of cases but this but still we need to exercise with care.

1. We have seen a US tourist buying a zoom lens at the shop, but it becomes a bottle of “Coca Cola” by time returned the Hotel, however police cannot help on the case as the invoice address was not existed in HK. ( He did not check the address on the invoice)

2. A case that Japanese bought a camera using cash for better discount,  he gave the money to one chap be believed was the sales man of the shop, but after 10 minutes he found out that he is gone. And the shop keepers kept saying that he did not aware he gave money to anyone…! He was cheated. (Bad Shop at TST). Police has been reported with complaints on the shop, but the closed and open somewhere with another Shop name.

A recent case in July, a Thai bought a used Franken Rolex SeaDweller, with paper and box with HKD$40,000, (good Deal, right?) It seems to be a good deal, but when he returned Bangkok, he found that the bracelet was from a Submariner. He complained by phone, mail but no response from the shop any more. That is a Shop in TST area. He asked me to expose this case to the internet but I think we should be more alert when we buy watch in Hong Kong. (a good reputable shop should list down on the invoice the watch case, S/N, the bracelet model No. on the invoice)

So What should we do?

1. Go trustful shops, approved Shop list from the Tourist Centre of HK

2. Check carefully on the invoice on the terms, some of the shop writes “Goods cannot be returned, nor refund” Then you should beware. Verify the address on the invoice, does it cope with the shop address you visit?

3. Buy always in Big Authorized Dealer, that is safest way!

Yes, the discount is not that attractive, but that is your decision to have a better discount or a better comfort and assurance of the watch you buy for years.

What we should check when we buy Rolex?

These are the items you may use as a counter check for verification.

1. Serial no. Of the watch is same on the Rolex warranty card and Shop invoice.

2. Check the laser Rolex logo under the sapphire at 6 o’clock position, is it clearly cut, sharp?

3. Check if there is Q code on left side tape on the watch.

4. Inspect the dial for defect or dust on the dial. (dust?  Yes, something but very rare, QC issue)

5. Check for signs like bluster or bubbles by re-taping on the watch sides, there is difficulties to remove and put back the tape outside Rolex factory. If it happens, the watch has been used not a brand new.

6. Check for shop mistakenly or purposely give you smaller or old box of different design. As they want to purge out all old boxes. Try to put the watch into the box and see if it could be close properly.

~The Warranty card with Country Code “888” in Hong Kong.

Shops that is situated in most expensive area selling low margin goods such as handphones, Camera and Chinese medicine, dried seafood...You should be alert when you buy in that kinds of shops. As normally they cannot recover their cost by selling goods via normal way of doing Business in that area.
The Electronics shop is characterized with a lot of of sales, say 6~8 sales in a small shop of 300 square feet. They were suspected with dealing money laundry monkey business too.

Rolex best of the best: Day Date Ref 1803.

For those who Love watches would not ignore this most adorable model Rolex 1803.

I have been posted 70 posts on this "Day Date", Why? Simply because there are so much fun to collect., to wear, to show, to depend, to expect on such a Long lasting Rolex Flag Ship Model 1803!

It is slimmer, smaller in outlook than the newer 18038,  it is super durable, never miss any of your Important dating with your girl friend, or buy friends, ex-wife at Pak Kai Hotel.

It is super Attractive, never been losing face in front of other watches at executive meeting, balls, parties and meeting your president.

But more funny part is that they have tried all effort to use different colour, material to make the watch so Attractive, to beautiful, I like those Wild Colour, I like Diamond, that Rolex 1803 has all I need.

Status of New 2014 Rolex Watches in HK

GMT Master II Black Blue Bezel Ref 116710BLNR List price $65,300- Very Few to zero stock at Three Rolex AD.

SeaDweller 4000 Ref 116600 comes in June, List price $78,800 -  Limited stock at 2 of the Three AD.

Milgauss 116400 GV Blue Dial Arrived two weeks ago list price $59,600 – Known to me only One AD has stock, long waiting list.

DeepSea D-Dial 116660 will arrive Mid September to HK, List price $90,500 – let’s wait for Mid September.

Which should be a MUST buy item?

Obviously they want to use this Black Blue GMT to uplift the image of GMT master as really I cannot see any piece of stock at these Ads.

SeaDweller 4000 price is position quite high and there is not much surprises and we can see the demand is not as expected, that is why I can get some discount and stock is also available.

Milgauss Blue dial is very beautify and it is a unisex wearing time instrument, the Manager of the shop is controlling whom to sell, VIP first, then you , then me….no discount of course!

DeepSea D-Dial with a “ Green” DeepSea logo…is a new face lifted and yet to see the response, but I am trying to say this is a daring awesome design of dial, will be one of the collective in the future…. A Must Buy item!

Every time I visit Audiophile shops, half-expecting to see a selection of Koetsu cartridges among the chronographs and the fountain pens. Why not? Some Koetsus are crafted from precious materials such as Jade, Onyx —and all of them can claim to being both high-tech and handmade. More to the point, some hobbyists say that these handmade Japanese pickups are the best you can buy.

Koetsu cartridges are made in small quantities by Fumihiko Sugano—the son of Koetsu's founder, the late Yoshiaki Sugano. The elder Sugano, who came and went with the 20th century, created the basic Koetsu cartridge design, pioneering the use of high-purity metals in particular, and naming the company after his ancestor and role model, the 16th-century artisan Honami Koetsu.

Nowadays, most of sought after was those cartridge made in 1980’s hand crafted by Yoshiaki Sugano. Some of them are asking for US$6,000 and more after using for a few years! Amazing!

If you are pen collector, I am sure you would like to buy some of the pens, as I always use Fountain pen to write, to drawing and to make note during a sales meeting…

These Montblanc 1929 big Red, Parker 1920 snake pen, Watermans Patrician 1929 , and the Dunhill Namiki , who had made some of the most daunting hand crafted pen in the 30s’ they are all collectible items. Well, if you do not write with Fountain pen, you might not know how good the pen could possibly write… it is a piece of art.

Technology could not be copied, like B&W Nautilus, many similar designs have been copied like the enclosed non-symmetric spiral hollow tube for absorbing the reflection, and the use of titanium or diamond coated diaphragm on the super tweeter.

You cannot easily (In fact I should say very difficult) copy the same sweet musical reproduction B&W make. As there is a lot of tuning know-how inside each of the manufacturing process of the loudspeaker and the choice of right material.

Rolex is not the typical example, they product some of the best reliable, everything design since 1956, Amongst all models: Submariner, Explorer, Yacht master, GMT Master, Daytona, Air King, the Day Date being the flag ship line of Rolex is no question one of the most beautiful functional time piece business man or watch collector like to get…

Though you have money, yet you may not able to buy some of the watches, like Daytona Rainbow., now Rolex AD accepts to have full payment first, then asking client to wait for 3 months. If Rolex could deliver you  that watch, you are the lucky one… there are 80% they will refund you as they does not able to find good enough of Rainbow gems on the bezel…
