Puzzle and Stop at the junction of the Road for an Automatic or a Quartz Movement?
Is Electronic Quartz movement a Watch Collector’s Taboo!? How About Rolex OysterQuartz Watch Day Date?

Remember one of the ways to tell a Fake Rolex is looking at the second hand, if it is jumping once per second rather than to sweep smoothly. That is a Fake Rolex! Well, to most of the people yes, but there are totally 25,000 Rolex OysterQuartz watches produces between 1977 and 2003 so far, those are the legendary Rolex OysterQuartz.

Rolex made a new technology conquering other Swiss Watches by launching a Rolex OysterQuartz which was a migration from mechanical watch into Electronics Watch, Rolex obtained the first patent mechanical Electronics Quartz Watch back to 1952. Note that we are talking about mechanical Electronics Quartz Watch!

In fact, Rolex had announced the Digital LED Sport watch under Ref 7056 prototype, don't worry, it has not been on sales ever or if you got one, you will be very Rich!

In the book written by British Collector James M. Dowling “The best of Time” mentioned that there were 21 amongst 50 Rolex patents were related to Electronic watches. Rolex had spent million dollars on research and development about mechanical Electronics Quartz Watch.

In 1970 Rolex produced Ref 5100 with Beta-21 electronic movement, but that is no being recognized to be repairable by Rolex Service Centre anymore as of today. So if you had one, probably your will be true a collector item as there are only 1,000 units made in 1970.

Rolex OYSTERQUARTZ
In 1972 Rolex began to independently develop a quartz watch, breaking away from its shared project with the Centre Electronique Horologer which had led to the creation of the Quartz ref. 5100. Thus, in 1977 the Oysterquartz line came into being; this line was equipped with calibres 5025 and 5055 with an oscillation frequency four times faster than the earlier calibre Beta 21.
The frequency of the quartz crystal is calibrated on the basis of the external temperature measured by a special sensor; however it can also be adjusted manually in anticipation of its inevitable aging.

In 1978 the high level of precision electronic movement Rolex OysterQuartz obtained by the quartz crystal was rewarded by the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) with the inscription of ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ on the face of the watch at 6 o’ clock.

The Oysterquartz is produced in both Datejust and Day-Date versions with an elegant polished case, a bracelet modeled on the case and the respective punching positioned under the shoulders. Both models of the Oysterquartz line are made with sapphire crystal and have their reference and matriculation numbers engraved on the back.

Inside of Rolex OysterQuartz
First Rolex Quartz model, the Ref, 5100. built with Beta 21 in 1970, same Movement as Enicar and Omega was using. They made 1,000 pieces, afterwards, Rolex started to make Rolex’s Own Electronics Quartz movement.

After 5 years extensive research and development, Rolex finally introduced the Cal. 5035 on its DATEJUST and Cal. 5055 on the Famous Day-Date model that was 1978.

Lexus Hybrid IS600hi
Rolex OysterQuartz isn't the same animal as you think.
This are like the Lexus IS600hi Hybrid car that has motor driven by packs of battery cells and also by combustion engine for both economic, less carbon monoxide emission and at same time offer you an advantage using traditional fuel.
The heart of the time piece
Rolex OysterQuartz is an analogue thermo-compensation “11 jewel movement”; that was one of the world’s first that utilized the latest CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor technology) which has an advantage of low power consumption. And the heart of the digital time circuitry with a 32khz Quartz oscillator. That 32,768 Hz is the heart of the timing device, 32,000 Hertz means 32,000 bps (beat per second) per second, that is 32,000 x3600 = 115,200,000 cycle per hour. Comparing with the best Grand Seiko 36,000 cycle per minutes. 36,000x60= 2,160,000 cycle per hours.
That Quartz movement has a 53,333 times better in resolution.  As the resolution is the basis for the timing, that is to say it is nearly has 53 times better in the time keeping capability.

As Rolex Does not have 36,000 CPS, they have 28,800 cps, (1,728,000 ) that means for fulfilling a timing need, a Rolex Quartz is better than it Rolex mechanical watch at least 66.67 time better.

So in my experience, My Rolex Day Date Ref 19018 has an accuracy of approximately less than 2 seconds a year. By Rolex Specification, they ensure a Monthly accuracy is <0.33 Seconds that include the temperature effect.

So I had been feeling good about Rolex OysterQuartz as it is super accurate, and I think it is many times better than the Rolex Mechanical Watch of Day Date Model.

OysterQuartz Day Date
This was likely the Rolex’ most Accurate Movement. It was made under such a great care to treat it like a piece of Gem, highly polished. Beautifully insert into the Solid, Robust, Sturdy Oyster Case. I like the weight, as Ref 19018 is even heavier than a Ref 18039 Day Date, the strap gives you super comfort in wearing, the strap has a special consideration of thickness, not too thin to support the mass of the watch, yet not too thick to give you too much Gold on the strap. If I can order, I think the strap could be made even thicker by 0.5mm. It would like more in balance. And I get more gold from Rolex!

The Mechanical OysterQuartz Movement
The drive mechanism for the 5035/5055 is very similar to the design of a traditional mechanical watch escapement.  The pulse motor drives a pallet fork which in turn moves a pallet wheel.  This wheel drives the second hand at a 1:1 ratio with one tick per second.  The hour and minute hands are driven off this pallet wheel.  The loud "tick" you hear every second are the pallets engaging the pallet wheel.  That is why the tick of the 5035/5055 has such a unique sound and is very much like the tick of a mechanical watch, though at one tick per second rather than the eight ticks per second of a 28,800 bph Rolex Perpetual movement. This drive mechanism also ensures the second hand steps around the dial smartly with zero backlash since the hand is effectively locked in place by the pallet fork in between each beat.

The Datejust Oysterquartz is made in three versions:

-Ref. 17000 in steel with a smooth bezel and integrated Oyster bracelet

-Ref. 17013 in steel/gold with a ridged bezel and steel/gold Jubilee bracelet

-Ref. 17014 in steel with a white gold ridged bezel and steel Jubilee bracelet

The Rolex Day-Date Oysterquartz is available in two versions

-Ref. 19018 in yellow gold with integrated President style bracelet

-Ref. 19019 in white gold with integrated President style bracelet

Many Rolex Day Date comes with Birch, Oak, Walnut dial, and I have not seen a Lapis Lazuli Dial and I think I may have. If you get one! That will be more expensive than any other mechanical Model Ref 1803, Ref 18038, Ref 118238, Ref 18039 or Ref 18049.

So far I have Ref 17000, Ref 17013, Ref 19018 and I am long to have one Ref 19019, that is the ultimate best Watch for me!!

Price of OysterQuartz
-Ref. 17000 in steel with a smooth bezel and integrated Oyster bracelet. HKD$22,000

-Ref. 17013 in steel/gold with a ridged bezel and steel/gold Jubilee bracelet HKD$28,000

-Ref 19018 Plan Dial Yellow gold HKD$65,000

-Ref 19019 Plan Dial White Gold HKD$85,000

Special Birch, Oak, Walnut add on value min.  HKD$10,000 on the watch

I estimate that a Ref19018 with Lapis Lazuli Dial is Priced between HKD$120,000-140,000 White gold even more expensive!

My question is : Do we have OysterQuartz with Lapis Blue Dial!?

What's Wrong with a Quartz Watch?

Top: Rolex Daytona stainless stell Ref 116520
Bottom: Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date Ref 19018 Yellow Gold

What is wrong with a Quartz Watch?

When I was working on a merchant vessels in 1980-1983; time keeping was solely done by a manual Winding maritime clock, Nardin, Zenith, Seiko and PateK Philippe. The second or Third officer had to take record on the watch every day on a log book to track the time. The Watch has 7 days power reserve and there is a big wing-nut key to do the winding.

I have noticed that it was within the range of +6 to – 4 seconds every day. Do not forget the watch does not have tourbillon and had to experience cold and hot weather. It was -25 degrees in Dalian and +36 degrees at Bangkok. That is a real chronometer.

The time is important to be used to check the position of the Ship through Sextant through some logarithm table. Of course the ship has been equipped with some other positional finding system Like Loran C, Omega, and the latest Satellite navigator system after 1986. Still there must equip a Chronometer and I can see all the Chronometers was Quartz driven after 90s.

The beauty of Quartz is accuracy that no mechanical watch can beat them, as it carry a 32,000 Hz (Cycle per second) Vibration frequency Quartz whereas mechanical watch movements used by Rolex, Breitling, and Omega, the movement calibers that obtain most of the COSC certificates are the Rolex 3135 (since 1988) (and variants 3155, 3175, 3185, 4130) and 2235, the ETA 2892A2 (and variants) and Valjoux 7750, each of which operates at 28,800 beats per hour.

Grand Seiko and Zenith El Primero has a higher frequency of 36,000 beats per hour. Even though, comparing with the Rolex OysterQuartz is 32,000x3,600/36,000=115,200 times Higher in beats per second.,

A Rolex OysterQuartz has a 115,200 times better in time keeping than ordinary mechanical Watch.

look at the COSC standard here, mechanical watch which is built to certify the Standard of COSC has an accuracy of +6 and -4 degrees every day, whereas a OysterQuartz watch is in the range of an average 0.07 second a day.

Don't forget we are talking about Chronometers that has been built with jewel bearings and precision parts to achieve that accuracy, most of the non COSC watch may have an accuracy of +15 -12 seconds a day. That can be 5 minutes a month!

COSC aka C.O.S.C. is Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, which is the institute responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of wristwatches in Switzerland. There are about 1,000,000 watches submitted for certification each year, large portion is from Rolex,, Omega, Breitling, Tag Huer and Panerai.

These are about 3% of the total watches Swiss made a year.

COSC not just serve mechanical Watch, but also Quartz Watch, refer to the following table.

Considering the fact that mechanical watches are almost never used for real timekeeping and navigation anymore, and that practically any quartz watch is vastly better in accuracy, certification may be considered a historic relic by some, but it verifies the accuracy and quality of a mechanical movement.
Though quartz is almost always more accurate, mechanical movements are preferred by some watch collectors and enthusiasts.

To me, sometimes it is easier to wear a watch that is very accurate and very reliable, besides, the Watch MUST be very beautiful!

The Choice is Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date Ref 19018 and Ref 19019.

But the Ref 19019 is very hard to get nowaday, and it very expensive, it is in the range of HKD$80,000 to HKD$100,000 depending on condition and type of dial.

As for Yellow Gold, it is more friendly in pirce, it is in the Range of HKD$65,000 to HKD$85,000 depending on condition and type of dial.

Of course, if that is a Tiger Eye, or Lapis Azuli dial, it will be very very Expensive no matter yellow gold or white gold, as the dial itself is already a piece of art!

Did Rolex ever made some QysterQuartz Day Date with these gemstones?

Killer Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date Ref 19018

Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date Ref 19018 and My Nunchaku

Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date with Birch Dial

OysterQuartz Day Date and Hermes Lizard Skin Fountain Pen Case

This is another one with oak Dial and Box
Killer Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date Watch Ref 19018

For 25 years Rolex produced the Oysterquartz in Datejust models (17000 stainless steel, 17013 steel/YG, 17014 steel/WG), and Day-Date models in all gold (19018 YG, 19019 WG). Special models of the Oysterquartz were also produced with jeweled dials, bezels, and bracelets. It has been estimated that in all less than 25,000 Oysterquartz watches were ever produced by Rolex.

Who kills the Electric car? The Oil company or GM?

Who Kill the Rolex OysterQuartz? No one knows, probably the new 90’s Swiss Manufacturing of Hi end watch gone too far away from some of the Electronics technology including Quartz. Again, time piece is used to keep time as the basic need, what's has wrong with a Quartz watch? Probably to blame low value image as there are Quartz watch selling HKD$20 a piece at Ap Liu Street!? Don’t forget that there are also HKD$60 for a mechanical Watch!

Probably the development cost of an accurate, durable Quartz watch is not as CHEAP as mechanical watch arena?! As Rolex OysterQuartz is one of the best Quart watches in the WORLD. Besides, the unique “tick” for every second it runs!? The mechanical Structure is sturdy, the watch case is so sleek and pretty and seem it is timeless.

It carries with the similar base plate design of Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, with a weight of 148 grams on your wrist give you a sense of massive Watch like driving the

legendary Hummer H3X with a 5.3L V8 Engine!

It runs of battery cells that could last for 2.5 years. Most of all, the battery Replacement is free at Rolex Service Centre.

The number of Yellow and White Gold Rolex OysterQuartz Day Date is estimated to be less than 5,000.

To a Collector point of view, this is good as they are Little in number of Production, it is pretty, It works perfectly with proven record on Mt, Everest.

And Most of all, the price is VERY CHEAP as of Today’ Gold watch. Average Selling price is About HKD$55,000-HKD$90,000 depending on material, condition, dial material and Colour.

As I can imagine, one day the Car running on Road will be 40% Battery powered by 2020, and at that time who knows those Rolex and Patek Philippe would be mostly Quartz? Who know that Obama would be the president of the USS in 2008?

When we see good dial, Day Date OysterQuartz, Buy it…

QuartzOysteregret- new word I use myself, it means if you do not buy Oyster Ouartz now, you will be Regret soon!

Rolex Ref 19019 Day Date OysterQuartz

This is a piece of Collectible item Paul has searched for months, he has the original White Gold Day Date with precision of less than 0.33 Second a month, probably the highest cost of Quartz Movement for any Swiss movement man made since 1979 until now.
White Gold of low profile life style., it took 10 months for RSC to change the Probably-the-last-handful-available-dial-in-all-Rolex-Spare-inventory!
He spent 3 months to finds the Original Box and the OysterQuartz Operation booklets.
What do you think this things will be sold in the Actions? I guess the hammer price is estimated to be HKD$125,000!
How many this type of watch we can still find on Earth, I think it will be less than 5 pieces.
If it comes with "Chinese" Day dial, this may be the only one!

Rolex OysterQuatz

I am still waiting my Ref, 19019 to come as It has been in Rolex HK for changing the Day and Date Dial to Chinese, being a Collector, I like to have the Chinese Character on the Rolex as it is rare! However, they always todl me to "wait"! I am going to lose my patience to wait!
OysterQuartz was produced for about 25,000 so far, and they are Collectible item especially the White gold version. So far I have not seen a Stella Red Dial OysterQuartz, If you have seen one , do not let it go!
I have picked up some of the ads and celebrity who used to be wearer of Rolex OysterQuartz.
Note that they were sold at US$1,275 for just a stainless steel DateJust in 1979, That is an equilvalent amount of HKD$70,000 in todays money. so if you can see a good condition OysterQuartz, you can consider buying it... as it is a good price to buy now!

Rolex OysterQuartz White Gold Ref, 19019

Another White Gold Rare Species, Rolex OysterQuartz Ref, 19019
Rolex Was made a new technology conquering other Swiss Watches by launching a OysterQuartz which is a migration from mechanical watch into Electronics Watch, they obtained the first patent mechanical Electronics Quartz Watch back to 1952.
In the book written by British Collector James M. Dowling “The best of Time” mentioned that there were 21 amongst 50 Rolex patents were related to Electronic watches.
Rolex had announced the Digital LED Sport watch under Ref 7056 prototype, don't worry, it has not been on sales. If you got one, you will be very Rich!

First Rolex Quartz model, the Ref, 5100. built with Beta 21 in 1970, same Movement as Enicar and Omega was using. They made 1,000 pieces, then started to make Rolex’s Own Electronics Quartz movement. In 1978, after 5 years research and development, Rolex introduced Cal. 5035 on its DATEJUST and Cal. 5055 on the Famous DAY-Date.

They're an analogue thermo-compensation 11 jewel movement (one of the worlds first) that utilized the latest CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) which has an advantage of low power consumption. And the heart of the digital time circuitry with a 32khz Quartz oscillator. This was likely the Rolex’ most Accurate Movement. It was made under such a great care to treat it like a piece of Gem, highly polished. Beautifully insert into the Solid, Robust, Sturdy Oyster Case.

OysterQuartz was extremely rare as they were produced in such a small number of 1,000 pieces a year, Since 1977 till 2001, they have totally made with a number less than 25,500 pieces. That is a small number in comparing with 150,000 mechanical Movement a year in the 70’s till close to 1,000,000 a new nowadays,  That is so rare to be found now.

Imagine also Rolex produced 10 pieces of stainless steel watch, only about 3 two tone and 1
So , this Ref 19019 is the rarest species of Rolex watch. If you can find a special Dial White Gold OysterQuartz, please send me a picture… How About Platinum? I have never heard of.. How about Stainless steel OysterQuartz, it must be the Prototypes, I you can find one , that may be the only one on Earth!

Now A day, a Ref, 19019 Rolex OysterQuartz White Gold may value about HKD$120,000. if you can have a special Dial like Red, Blue or Yellow ( I think it might not have)  the Price is a few folds higher I guess!
So When people wear a White Gold OysterQuartz, that is a real Collectible Item.
HK Snob
PS
The above White Gold OysterQuartz was a Courtesy Picture oif Chrono24, and the One Yellow Gold OysterQuartz is mine, and I had once owned a Solid Yellow gold Black Dial without Diamond and two Two Tone Black Dial. I am looking forward to buy the one in White Gold from one of the Hong Kong Collectors. Just have to match with timing that I have that amount of money at same time he needs to sell it...
Also I missed buying the very special OysterQuartz from friend of mine last year, I feel regret now as it was in mint condition, great design and great FAT body (not been  polished)... I think this watch has less than 30 pieces in teh world!

The Most Unique beautiful Sportive Rolex Day date OysterQuartz

OysterQuartz was made since 1977 till 2004 for 25 years, Rolex produced 1,000 pieces per year, so total unit of 25,000 was made, I estimate that 60% is SS version, 30% is TT version and 10% is Solid Yellow Gold version,  I have never heard of any Pink Gold version has been made!

Amongst these 2500 pieces of Solid Gold version, there is about 500 pieces using special Stone Dial like the one I have…Assuming that 100 pieces are badly worn off, and 100 pieces were gone or damaged, or could not resists the temptation to turn it into cash by selling the heavy gold cases to goldsmith, I believe that the watch I current have has less than 300 similar pieces in the World…It is rare! And the Gold Strap is sleek, beautiful, somewhat look like the Nautilus watch strap design, even we look it it today, it is updated! The watch is heavy, it is about 3.05 tael in weight.

In 1977, the Oysterquartz was introduced the quartz crystal used in the oscillator circuit was changed to a tuning fork shape. The earlier movements were known internally at Rolex as Mark I movements, while the later ones with the new shape quartz crystal were known as Mark II movements.

The Mark I 5035 Datejust movements were never submitted to the COSC for chronometer certification, which accounts for the absence of "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dials of the very early Oysterquartz Datejust models.

Everything about the design and construction of the 5035/5055 module shows that Rolex intended to build this movement to be a "Life-Time" movement, designed to be serviceable and serviced just like their mechanical movements.

In fact, apart from the electronics and the pulse motor, the "mechanics" of the 5035 are the same as the 3035 automatic movement that was also introduced in 1977 and used in the Submariner and other Date/Datejust models for over a decade.

The driving mechanism for the 5035/5055 is very similar to the design of a traditional mechanical watch escapement.

There is a temperature sensing thermister that can be adjusted for Temperature compensation. As well, There is free battery cell changing each time at Rolex service Centre!

Even though the technology of quartz wristwatch timekeeping has moved beyond that found in the 5035/5055, this movement still remains one of the most "over-engineered" quartz movements ever produced and clearly carries on the Rolex tradition of solid engineering, superb finishing, and understated beauty.

Advancements in technology have yielded quartz modules with superior accuracy, but when it debuted, the 5035/5055 only had one true rival from a technological standpoint: the 2.4Mhz Omega 1516 movement used in their famous Marine Chronometer wristwatches of the mid 70s. But from the standpoint of "build quality" and finish (anglage, perlage, and Geneva stripes), the 5035/5055 still reigns supreme, something that is not likely to change in the foreseeable future.

So in short this is a rare beautiful, sportive, gold Rolex OysterQuartz… A Collector’s item.
