2024 Resolution

Reflecting on the year 2023, it has been a challenging period, particularly when compared to the relatively prosperous year of 2022. The prices of properties and luxury goods have plummeted, and the HS index has hit a low point of 16000, indicating a bearish market. With just five hours remaining, 2023 is about to become a part of history.

Contemplating my actions throughout the year, I can't help but feel the passage of time accelerating as I grow older. In the second quarter, I set a personal goal to achieve 100 consecutive flip hand push-ups by December 31, 2023. While my personal best stands at 50 repetitions, reaching halfway to my target, I recognize the inherent limitations of the human body. Completing 50 push-ups in one go is a source of great satisfaction, especially considering that there are likely fewer than 5000 individuals worldwide, particularly men over 60, who can accomplish this feat. In 2024, I will continue to explore different methods to further improve my performance.

Maintaining intermittent fasting has been a remarkable achievement, enabling me to sustain a weight range of 129-131 pounds. I am grateful for the vitality it has bestowed upon me and the absence of any medication requirements.

My venture into Wing Chun Kung Fu has instilled me with newfound confidence in handling both work and personal interactions. I am determined to continue my practice.

In terms of my watch collection, I recently acquired an Audemars Piguet Platinum square skeleton manual winding watch, becoming the fifth piece in my Audemars Piguet collection. Looking ahead to 2030, I hope these timepieces will appreciate in value and potentially be sold for $3 million.

Within my family life, I find immense joy in the relationships I share with my daughters and their mothers. They are my angels, and I hold no regrets. My love extends to their mothers as well.

As we approach the dawning of 2024, my sincere wish is for a year free from conflict and strife. May we all enjoy good health and happiness throughout the year.

Regarding my job, I aspire to forge stronger relationships with my customers, assisting them in attaining profitable outcomes, as this is an integral aspect of my professional responsibilities.

Happy new year!

The Market for Luxury Watches in Hong Kong: Analysis and Forecast

Introduction:

The market for luxury watches in Hong Kong has garnered significant attention, with many individuals inquiring about its current status and future prospects. In this essay, we will delve into the dynamics of the market, focusing on notable brands and their price trends. Additionally, we will provide insights into the potential forecast for 2024, taking into account global geopolitical factors and their potential impact on the luxury watch industry.

Current Market Overview:

Currently, the market for luxury watches in Hong Kong is characterized by a lack of transparency in terms of real transactions. Although dealer groups provide trade quotes, genuine transactions are scarce. Rolex authorized dealers (AD) possess limited stock, primarily available to select customers at suggested retail prices (SRP). Moreover, the secondary market for Rolex watches, particularly models like Daytona, GMT Master, and Submariners, has demonstrated relative stability in terms of pricing.

Luxury Brands and Price Trends:

Among the luxury brands, Audemars Piguet has experienced the most significant impact on prices. Hot items such as the Royal Oak have reportedly seen a decline of around 40% in market price. On the other hand, Vacheron Constantin, despite not being in highest demand, has managed to secure some of the sought-after models at prices drops from 30%, a notable decrease from 50-60% of AP comparing with price of 2022. Consequently, the current market presents an opportune time for potential buyers to consider acquiring hot models at comparatively lower prices.

Forecast for 2024:

When looking ahead to 2024, it is vital to consider the global geopolitical landscape and its potential influence on the luxury watch market. Ongoing conflicts, such as the US-RU-UK and IS-PA wars, are crucial factors to monitor. Notably, there are indications that US Republicans may reject any financial support for the UK President, potentially leading to the end of the RU-UK war by Q1 2024. If this occurs, global attention will likely shift to the Middle East region, where growing numbers of individuals feel disconnected from Israeli interests and may advocate for an end to the conflicts. However, the resolution of these conflicts ultimately depends on the actions of the United States.

Assuming the wars in the Middle East do reach resolution in 2024, it is expected that the world economy will experience a surge in positive energy, thereby fostering growth across various sectors. In the luxury watch market, this renewed economic vigor may lead to increased demand and subsequently higher prices by Q2 2024. It is crucial to note that these forecasts are subject to change and should be monitored closely.

Today's Sample Watch Prices:

To provide a glimpse into the current market, here are some estimated prices for popular watch models in Hong Kong:

Rolex GMT Master Pepsi Jubilee: HK$150,000

Rolex Daytona 2023 126500LN: HK$265,000

Rolex Daytona 116500LN (White): HK$220,000

Rolex Submariner 126610LN: HK$110,000

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Blue 16202ST: HK$650,000

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Blue 15202ST: HK$500,000 (discontinued model)

Vacheron Constantin Overseas 4605V/200R-B978 (35mm, pink gold): HK$465,000

Vacheron Constantin FiftySix 4600E/000R-B441 (40mm, pink gold, automatic): HK$210,000

Patek Philippe 5711 (Steel): HK$500,000

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the luxury watch market in Hong Kong offers opportunities for both seasoned collectors and individuals seeking good value. It is essential not to be swayed solely by a brand's image and hype, as there are many well-priced watches available. Ultimately, the true value of a watch lies in wearing and enjoying it, rather than keeping it stored away. As the market continues to evolve, staying informed about current trends and developments will be vital for making informed purchasing decisions.

Just to see some of the common Watch buying behavior in Hong Kong

Low-ball buyer tricks when purchasing watches in Hong Kong

False Indications of Interest: Some low-ball buyers may pretend to be highly interested in a watch and engage in extensive discussions with the seller to create the impression that they are serious buyers. However, their intention is to negotiate a significantly lower price or take advantage of the seller's desperation to make a sale.

Offering Unreasonably Low Prices: Low-ball buyers may intentionally make absurdly low offers for a watch, well below its market value. Their strategy is to start negotiations at an extremely low point, hoping that the seller will accept a higher price that is still lower than the watch's true worth.

Threatening to Walk Away: Another tactic employed by low-ball buyers is to threaten to walk away from the deal if the seller does not agree to their desired price. This approach relies on pressuring the seller into accepting a lower offer to avoid losing the potential sale altogether.

Highlighting Flaws: Some low-ball buyers may exaggerate or fabricate flaws or defects in the watch to justify a lower price. By pointing out perceived issues, they aim to negotiate a reduced price, even if the flaws are minimal or insignificant.

Cash Offers: Low-ball buyers might offer to pay in cash as a way to entice sellers into accepting a lower price. The promise of immediate payment in cash can be appealing to sellers who want a quick sale, potentially leading them to accept a lower offer.

Low-ball buyers have been attempting to negotiate with incredibly low counter offers, sometimes even as low as 50% of your listed price. They are extremely particular, claiming that your Rolex lacks papers or a white tag, despite the fact that you haven't mentioned those details in your post. They insist that the watch is used, even though you have already indicated its condition.

Furthermore, it is perplexing why they would mention the watch being used again when that fact has already been established.

Some low-ball buyers argue that their own buyers are extremely wealthy and suggest that you should offer a larger discount based on that. In my opinion, if their buyers are truly affluent, it would be more reasonable for them to purchase a brand-new watch from a boutique. It seems somewhat amusing that they are interested in buying my $20K watch.

To protect yourself as a seller, it's important to set a realistic price range for your watch based on its market value and condition. Be prepared to negotiate, but also be firm about your bottom line. Trust your judgment and don't feel pressured to accept an offer that you're not comfortable with. Consider seeking advice from experienced watch sellers or appraisers to ensure you're pricing your watch appropriately.

Remarks I found a funny one, please check yourself above.

All About watch Market in Hong Kong and Asia Q4 2023

Watch market 2023 Q4

The luxury market is subject to various factors such as economic conditions, geopolitical events, and changing consumer preferences. This is my personal opinion.

Best ten years 2011-2021

Diminishing Demand: Hong Kong and Asia have been significant contributors to the global luxury market, since 2012-1015years with a growing middle class and increasing disposable incomes driving demand for luxury goods. Since 2019 COVID people are forced staying home and more time more money for spending on so called “watch investment” many of them are newbies who knows nothing about watches but they contribute a lot on the growth of watch market, peak was Q4 2021. Rolex and other luxury watch price reached highest which is about 2- 3.5X MSRP.

Now the market drops 45% in average of the peak, that is about 1.5X to 2X of MSRP. To some of watch dealers and collectors, the price is still much higher than the MSRP, but to the outsider and the newbies they see a “big drop” on watch price, they have hope that the falls is still carry one, that is why no one intends  to buy a watch that would be lose it value in one month or two.

 Global economy

The Proxy war of Ukraine triggers the down turn of the world economy.

COVID19 had been a torture to our world economy, China is the lead to bring up the Asian commercial market but still struggle to regenerate free money for the general class people to buy “luxury” goods.’

Crypto money drop hell a lot from 2021 $60,000 to now $26,000 approx. that is one of the main drivers to pull the watch market down, during the high time of the Bitcoin, Elon Musk could accept it for buying Tesla. Some dealers could allow Rolex or RM trade using Bitcoin but that was history. During 2019-2021 many people earned virtual currency in the Bitcoin market converted them in to physical Rolex and RM

Tech war

USA sanctioned everything to Russia and China, recently on set technology and forced Dutch ASML to stop shipping eUV Lithography 3-4 nm chip making machine to China. Huawei phone was No.1 in 2018 and US declared war to Huawei and orders his northern guy to kidnapped Huawei CFO for two years. She was released back to China on 15 Sep 2020. She lead the technology team to make a detour and  use current DUV 28nm Lithography equipment to use multiple emersion lithography process to create 7 nm chip as CPU on Mate60 phone!

 Human buying psychology

The majority of the general people will not buy when the market is dropping on stock market also as watch market. That is the cause of the massive scale in price drop.

Chinese Consumers: Chinese consumers have been a dominant force in the luxury market, both domestically and abroad. Their purchasing power and appetite for luxury brands have had a significant impact on the overall market growth in the region. Due to the downturns in China consumer market so as the Watch market.

Pre-Owned and Vintage: There has been a growing interest in pre-owned luxury goods and vintage items back in 1990-2015. But since 2018 Rolex announced not supporting older watches beyond 2000 in service. The vintage Rolex watches see a significant drops in demand. Especially Rolex who vintage watch price are all controversial on the period matching, lume condition and whether the watches is a frankenwatch or not, these scare the newbie on vintage collection. And the market is not long as good as before. Now in Hong Kong the vintage market is classified as “dead market”!

US harvest the world with increase of interests rate

No one would risk again buying the uncertain watch in the market, they rather keep their money in bank for better interests, HK USD interest rate is 4.5, UK Pound even p to 10.5% p.a. and Money is King again.

Buyers’ market

The appeal of new limited editions, unique designs, and the potential for investment in rare pieces have attracted consumers and collectors switch from pre-owned and vintage market. It is best time for those top 1% world rich people and watch collectors who are looking for his beloved watch pieces now as the price is “Cheap” to them.

 How about price now

Rolex Platinum Daytona new $750,000 (was $1m in 2021)

Rolex Daytona 116500LN White is $225,000 (was $350,000 in 2022 Q1)

Rolex Pepsi 126710BLRO is $150,000 (was $190,000 in 2022)

Patek Philippe 5711-1A is $720,000 (was $> $1.m in 2022)

Patek Philippe 5711R is $900K ( was $1.5M in 2021)

AP 15500 Blue is $35000 (was $500,000 in 2021)

AP 15202 ST is $500,000 (was $980,000 in 2021)

RM011-01 Mancini 2014 like new is $1.5M (was 2M in 2022)

RM030 Polo white ceramic 2016 (50 pcs) is $2M (was 3M in 2021)

(Price listed here is an average trade price only as this fluctuates daily, FYR only)

 2024 Q1

Well, no one has a crystal ball but likely I feel that the watch market will be gaining momentum slowly.

As my personal opinion.

1.       Buy only if you like the watch no matter Citizen, Seiko, Rolex or AP…

2.       Use them as a timepiece rather than keep it in vault to let it ages. The watch is not the parmesan ham or Chinese Lap Yuk!

3.       Looking for rare piece if you want to maintain certain value of it as this is always golden rule

The lesser the more value.

Many people asks me buying Rolex at MSRP, I think still far from what they can expect. If they still want to buy Skydweller green, Pepsi or Daytona with MSPR, he can wait at the AD or boutique if they are SVIP, and if they think you had trivial purchase history there, don’t waste your time. You had rather o buy a Mark Six as the chance to win three or four number is much higher than you get a Daytona at Rolex Boutique with MSRP.

Till next post.

When the big watch hype will come again?

The watch has changed a lot over the last 120 years.

From modifying a pocket watch adding a strap to be use for soldiers in the turn of last 20 century, watch with strap wearing on wrist become the norm in 1920.

Since then a lot of change on watch size took place, between 1920-1960 size is about 30 mm to 36 mm

In 1950 size 35mm and size 36mm was classified as very large watch, nominal size is 33mm.

Gradually, size keeps on increasing from 36mm a Date Just to 41mm Date Just same for Rolex Day Date, there is more bigger watches were seen in 2000-2010, the Panerai was the iconic larger watch as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were wearing big watch in the movie, that created the Hype. By then the larger the watch, the bolder, more daring and more showy of the persona men’s best accessory.

Now since 2016, the trend has stopped, in a opposite way, the watch size was change towards smaller and thinner manner. By 2010, size of 39-47 were the big size watch, by now the nominal value of most brands watch are between 35-39 mm. It is getting smaller.

Now people is getting bored with bigger watches, and tend to get smaller, the sweet spot of men watch for Asians are 34-38mm in my opinion, for wrist with seize 17cm and over larger watch may look for suitable.

In my opinion, it’s your choice preferring a larger or smaller watch.

Larger watches are good to tell time and be seen far way from others.

Larger watch is ore on sport watches.

Smaller watches look more elegant and less gaudy.

Smaller watches usually is manual winding and thin automatic dress watch.

Typically I like them more as it was on certain in door of office occasions

Of course I have large watch such as 44-45mm Panerai for certain outdoor occasion.

I think all are up to your choice, either smaller or bigger so long you love them is OK

Today the bigger one seems lose it glory as they did in 2000, but today I see a Panerai Submersible S BRABUS Verde Militare 47mm, it is a cross over between Panerai and Brabus, a daring big watch with MSRP of HK$391,000. It is a nice piece. Who knows when the big watch hype come again?

Market price of luxury watch at Q3 2023

After an unprecedented surge in 2021 and 2022, the pre-owned luxury watch industry is going through a rapid decline as watch dealers and investors flood the market with supply.

Prices for the once highly sought-after Rolex Daytona, Patek Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak models have all dropped 30% to 35%

Watch values have been hit by slowing economic growth, US Proxy war at Ukarine, Taiwan straits tension created by the western Government, stupid sanctions to China on Semiconductor chips, higher interest rates and the collapse of cryptocurrencies.

In recent months, watch dealers and investors have flooded the market with supply of once-sought-after Rolex Daytona, Patek Nautilus and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak models, leading to a 24 per cent decline in a luxury watch market index.

Typical model price of Mar 2022 and 2023 are listed here.

Patek 5711/1a $1.2M / $840,000

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak discon. 15202 ST $1.3M / $650K

Rolex 116610LN NOS Year 2020 $120K /$ 90K

Daytona 116100LN White $430K /$230K

Daytona 116520 White A series $240K / $190K

Vacheron Constantin Overseas 5500V/110A  Blue $330K  / $280K

Now I am sure the price is still not the bottom, the richer is always be the more richer as they have

Money to buy now.

Now we see the cheaper watches $<80K are moving fast, while the more expensive one such as higher $150K are slow movers.

Buying bahaviour of HKers

There are many reasons why a buyer may choose not to make a purchase, and some common excuses that buyers may give include:

1. Price: The buyer may feel that the price of the product or service is too high, or they may not see the value in what they are being asked to pay.  70% of the cases.

2. Need: The buyer may not feel that they need the product or service, or they may feel that they can get by without it. 5%

3. Timing: The buyer may not be ready to make a purchase at this time, or they may be waiting for a better deal or promotion. 5%

4. Trust: The buyer may not trust the seller or the product, or they may have had a bad experience with a similar product or service in the past. 10%

5. Competition: The buyer may be considering other options or may have found a better deal elsewhere. 10%

6. Decision-making: The buyer may be indecisive or unsure about what they want, or they may need more information before making a decision. 5%

7. Logistics: The buyer may have logistical concerns, such as shipping or delivery issues, or they may not be able to find the product or service they are looking for in their area. 5%

It's important to note that these excuses are not always the real reasons why a buyer chooses not to make a purchase, and it's up to the seller to try to understand the buyer's needs and address any concerns they may have.

Here are the most common reasons your buyer goes radio silent: They've made a decision but they're on their own timeline. Whether they're going with you or a competitor, or are going to put off the purchase, your customer has made an informal decision, they just don't have to BUY right at this moment.

And most of all, I dislike Radio Silence, juts say I don’t buy now, or I pass, or I will not consider it now… is OK

Tiffany Blue Watch ref 73/15 diver watch

Tiffany & Co. has consistently exceeded expectations with phenomenal products, and there is no exception for this watch, which looks very similar to the Rolex Sub-Mariner style. This unique piece is incredibly rare and is very rarely found available in the market today. This beautiful timepiece features a Stainless Steel case that measures approximately 39mm (case excluding crown) x 8mm (high). The case is topped with a superb blue red rotating diving bezel. Behind the crystal is a matching blue dial with silver tone luminescent hour markers, matching hands, and a date feature located at 3 o'clock, in a style that is very similar to the Rolex Submariner. This ETA Calibre 995 Quartz powered watch also has a solid Stainless Steel water proof screw back case. The watch is complete with its original Tiffany & Co. warranty papers, roll box, and pouch. Dated 1992 in Japan. Look at the patina Lume is so beautiful with matching hand colour. As you now know, in today’s market, it is virtually impossible to come by this vintage timepiece in Brand New condition such as this one. If you are looking for an incredibly rare and durable timepiece that isn't as heavy as a traditional diver's watch, this classic and sophisticated watch is an absolute necessity addition to my collection!

Burgundy is selling US$10,000, Black is selling US$7,956, What do you think the value of blue is?

Luxury Watch market changes

The luxury watch market is constantly evolving, and trends come and go. While vintage Rolex watches were popular since 2005 till 2025, there has been a recent trend towards gold Rolex watches and even gold watches with diamond accents. These watches have become increasingly popular among collectors and enthusiasts who want to make a bold statement with their timepieces. However, it's important to note that preferences in the luxury watch market can vary depending on the region, cultural influences, global gold price, hype from the celebrities and movies stars and individual tastes.

While vintage Rolex watches have always been highly sought after, the trend has shifted towards newer models that feature more eye-catching designs and embellishments. It's possible that some people may have grown tired of stainless steel sports watches like Rolex for more than a decade, and are looking for something different and more luxurious For example, the Rolex Daytona with a diamond-encrusted bezel has become increasingly popular among collectors, as has the Rolex GMT Master II with its unique combination of meteorite and or with gold and diamonds.

In addition to Rolex, other luxury watch brands such as Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Richard Mille have also seen a surge in popularity in recent years. These brands offer a range of watches that cater to different tastes and preferences, from classic and understated to bold and extravagant.

Ultimately, the choice of watch is a matter of personal preference and style. Some people may prefer the understated elegance of a steel sports watch, while others may prefer the bold and luxurious look of a gold and diamond watch. What's important is finding a watch that suits your tastes and meets your needs, whether that's for everyday wear or special occasions.

Notable trend is that there are having less people is focusing on buying those vintage Rolex as I had mentioned before, there was a lot of price difference say on Mark I of Rolex GMT Master 1675 than Mark II or III, well, nowadays there seems less concern about this so far people can recognize that is a 1675 GMT would be accepted, of course more demanding collector will still look for rarer Mark I.

In short the vintage Rolex price is not synchronized with the price up as the new Rolex.

That is quite pathetic , Recently we have seem a Daytona Zenith 16520 A series white is selling $170K , I think this was $220K in 2022. Also we can see a floating line Daytona 16520 Black is now $330K, that is much cheaper than 2021.

So if you are keen on buying good stuff, this is the time.

Those Daytona are never out of fashion! Especially with gold and diamond, they are good to buy now.

Quiet Luxury

Quiet luxury is a fashion and lifestyle that emphasizes understated, high-end quality and design. They do not buy logos or branding to show off its status. Quiet luxury emphasizes subtle details, fine precious materials, iconic design, everlasting value, and impeccable craftsmanship, with the goal of creating a sense of effortless elegance and sophistication. It's often associated with minimalist or timeless styles, and can be seen as a reaction against the excess and conspicuous consumption that have been associated with traditional luxury. Overall, quiet luxury is about a refined and discerning taste that values quality and craftsmanship over showiness or status symbols. For watches, more collectors have been gone through all the long and winding road in pursuit of their early watches, they come to one state that there is no competition of how many pieces, but a handful of iconic pieces could be creating a “WOW!” to the eyes of others.

Their target is something nice, delicate, coming with a history or story, not necessarily an skin deep diamond watch. On the contrary, an ordinary watch in outlook but carrying a touching story, not a steel diver watch, not a simple GMT dual time. Not a Rolex Submariner 116610LN that has been produced over 420,000 pieces, nor anything that you can buy at your AD.

Size need not to be as big as one can’t wear or too small that can’t read the time, dial should be the main theme of the watch one can tell that is special, unique, a Skeleton watch, a Salmon dial, or Grey dial. Guilloche, tapisserie, white enamel dial, or a beautifully patina on the dial and lume.

Switzerland has a long history of producing high-quality watches, dating back to the 16th century. Swiss watchmakers have a reputation for precision, craftsmanship, and innovation, and many of the most famous and respected watch brands in the world are based in Switzerland.

The older Swiss watch brands often use high-quality materials and movements that are designed to last for decades or even centuries. These watches are often made with precious metals, such as gold or platinum, and feature complex mechanical movements that are hand-assembled and finished by skilled craftsmen. Because of their exceptional quality and durability, Swiss watches often hold their value better than other types of watches.

As a result, they can command high prices on the vintage and collector's market, making them a valuable investment for those who appreciate fine craftsmanship and exclusivity. They are Patek Philppe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Girard-Perregaux, Jaeger Le Coutle. Newer comers like Panerai, A Lange and Sohn, FPJ, and Rolex.

The Vintage watches have been losing their glory over the last 5 years mainly because they are already over priced and hard to authenticate the watch, more people are going to switch their focus on neo-vintage watch, such as sapphire crystal Rolex, which are less tricky and less chance to be frankenwatch.

So What I am looking for is something I like, I can wear, affordable by myself, preferably with these Brands, precious metals is the prime consideration, Limited edition, size can be 33-39mm for my wrist.

Integrated bracelet sport watch with steel, dress watch with a Class, or some complications such as perpetual Calendar or Tourbillon.

My Special focus is Laureato 8010, 36 mm, 1995 release date. A few hundred produced and the first mechanical Laureato, Laureato Olimpico Chronograph 8017, 40 mm,  1996. 999 pieces made. The first Laureato Chronograph. Marked the end of the Olimpico line in conjunction with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Vacheron 222 totally 500 made, Patek Nautilus 3700,  3800J only 5 pieces made, 3800G 50 pieces made, Audemars 5402 A series, Panerai Pre Vendome series, Rolex 16520 white enamel dial, or 16520 P K Y Creamy dial.

Last but not least, searching your ideal watch is the most interesting part of whole watch collection journey. Do you agree? Do share your idea with me at hksnob@yahoo.com.hk.

Luxury watch trend in next 5 years 2024-2028

We all know it's difficult to predict with certainty what the exact trends in the high-end luxury watch market will be over the next five to ten years, as consumer preferences can be influenced by a variety of factors such as fashion, technology, celebrities’ preference, watch maker influence, and cultural shifts. However, based on current trends and market indicators, there are a few predictions that can be made.

One trend that may continue to gain popularity is the customization of luxury watches. Some high-end watch brands offer customers the ability to customize their watches with different materials, colors, and finishes, and this trend may continue to expand over the next few years. Typical example is Rolex Day Date “puzzle” at W & W premiere 2023 that will be having MSRP $0.5M, I can say the market price will be not less than $1.5m.

In terms of price trends, it's difficult to predict with certainty how prices will change over the next five years. However, based on historical trends, it's likely that prices for high-end luxury watches will continue to rise over time. Remember the price of watch was low in 2011 and starting 2012 price started to move up till 2022, that is ten years cycle, I strongly believe by end of 2023 watch price will start to move up. Now we all know Rolex price is moving at its lowest range after the highest price record in 2021, at that time a Daytona White ceramic 116500 was about $450,000. Now it is about $290,000.  A Submariner 116610LN New was selling $120,000 in Nov 2021, now probably we can get one two years watch NOS at $95000, that is a 24% price drop.

Athletes, movie stars, and singers can have a significant influence on watch trends, as they often serve as brand ambassadors or are seen wearing certain watches in public. Based on current trends and market indicators, there are a few indications of which watch brands and styles may be popular among these influencers in 2023. Brad Pitt worn a Vacheron Constantin “222”, a 37mm solid yellow gold watch in 2022.

One indication is the continued popularity of sport watches among athletes and other active individuals. This may include watches with fitness tracking capabilities, durable materials, and other features that cater to an active lifestyle.

Another indication is the growing interest in vintage and retro-inspired watches. Many high-end watch brands are releasing new models that pay homage to classic designs from the past, the 2023 retro of ingenieur of IWC,  Vacheron Constantin 222 in yellow gold. and these watches may appeal to movie stars and other celebrities who value timeless style and sophistication.

In terms of watch brands, Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet are all popular among athletes, movie stars, and singers, and may continue to be in 2023. Other brands that may gain popularity among these influencers include Hublot, Richard Mille, and Omega.

Ultimately, the influence of athletes, movie stars, and singers on watch trends can be difficult to predict, as their preferences can be influenced by a variety of factors such as personal style, brand partnerships, and cultural trends. However, by staying attuned to the brands and styles favored by these influencers, watch enthusiasts can gain insight into the broader trends shaping the high-end watch market.

I always think that there have been a lot of gatherings in Switzerland from the big watch makers to lay down some road map on what should they do in creating new watches in the coming years.

John Mayer’s gold watch such as Rolex Submariner in gold, Daytona green dial 116508, Daytona Paul Ip 6263. Meaning certain Daytona would be a good watch to be worn by the singers. It is a good value keeper as a watch. Week End debuted to uneven reviews at Cannes yesterday, where the singer continued one of the most sensible horological trends of 2023. Size has been changed from 40-42 reduction to 36-39mm since 2018 until now. Even some men wearing Cartier Crash which I presume that is a smaller watch. More thin that how lady watch. Yes, The Week End’s stunning gem-set Piaget, the Limelight Gala High Jewelry Watch, was technically designed for—and marketed to—women. “More than a women's luxury watch…” reads a bit of copy on Piaget’s site. Can you recall that there is a lot of persons were wearing lady watch back in 1985? What is next?

Conclusion

Watch price will become stable and start to rise by end of 2023

Watch size continue to be smaller in diameter 36-39mm

Gold as a watch material is getting popular

More peoples will go for dress watch of course the ratio will not be as high as comparing with steel sport watch.

Lady watch as a new trend yet to be a norm as in 1986 for male celebrity, need to be observed more.

Aftermath of recent Vacheron Constantin 222 auction

After the recent auction of a Vacheron Constantin 222 white gold hit at a stunning price of HK$5M.

I guess that at the marketing and sales discussion at Vacheron Constantin headquarters, there may be having a topics is whether they are going to produce a White Gold Retro version of 222 Jumbo.

As I know many watch collectors are quite prefer a White Gold than a yellow Gold version of a sportive 222. So they even can make a more aggressive MSRP for the White gold version.

Lets watch out.

Next is the model Overseas Generation One 42042 with a case diameter of 37mm There are a few beautiful dial on the first generation Overseas, such as Salmon, blue and white. Will there be a possibility for Vacheron Constantin to make another line of new watches with the classy design of an Overseas series?

To me 50/50. lets see.

I have a White dial, Blue dial 42042 and a Salmon Dial 42052 35 mm version.

I have never owned a wonderful 42042 Salmon 37mm version so far.

Watch Price 2023 Q2 update, still bad

All watch trade activities have been softened a lot comparing with the same time in 2022.

Roughly speaking we seemed to have a false hope that watch price risen a bit after March 2023 when the more visitors are encouraged to Hong Kong,  but after observing for two months. That is proven a false hope.

Rolex buyers are not as aggressive on buying as they tend to look for lower offers in the market.

Even they confirm to buy today, they shall be gone on Tomorrow.

Audemars Piguet price drops 40% comparing with May 2021, and 30% comparing with May 2022.

Patek price also dropping a lot like 25-40% depending on models.

Reason behind is the global economy is bad, after the US Silicon Valley bank, the Signature Bank and the first republic band closure... there is a lot of monetary movement from the Western banks to other chosen  banks for higher security level, Swiss Credit bank was in big trouble too.

Looking forward

Speculating, But this is the best time for people who are keen at search for those watches they like, they may get a better price.

All it takes is Knowledge, capital and guts to buy vintage collectible watch

This is a very interesting story of a rare Vacheron Constantin 222 watch.

5 months ago there is watch show held in Hong Kong, friend of mine spotted a beautiful Vacheron Constantin 222 from a western dealer, he was asking certain price which is about HK$480000, he was trying to think if this is real stuff from Vacheron Constantin as this is made of white gold. Googles did to help to tell, well if a stainless steel he could have bought is as there are known certain 100 pieces of steel and in yellow gold Jumbo 222. But this is white gold... he finally dropped down the watch, another anxiously waiting friend of mine grabbed it instantly and asking for final price, he bought it on the next day.

I had such a great honor to wear this piece of watch myself at from him. Heavy like 180 grams, beautifully made, also clean cases as it was fresh from factory... I have a yellow gold 222 but it was my first time seeing a white gold.... well, this watch was auction with HK$5M as shown here.

Moral of the story is all it takes is knowledge, capital and most important one is guts... do you dare to buy if there is even no information on a watch available on Google....

He bought it.... a man of knowledge, capital and GUTS. Of course you have to spend time focusing on sourcing it. That is a great fun if you can find a watch you like.

Congratulations!

Don't expect there is no fake Rolex bought from Pawn Shop in Hong Kong

If a Hong Kong pawn shop buys a fake Rolex watch unknowingly, they may not be held legally liable for selling counterfeit goods, as long as they can demonstrate that they had no reason to suspect that the watch was fake.

However, if a pawn shop knowingly purchases and resells counterfeit goods, they could face legal consequences, including fines and even imprisonment. It's important to note that buying and selling counterfeit goods is illegal in Hong Kong, and the authorities take this issue very seriously. Therefore, it is in the best interest of pawn shops to take all necessary precautions to ensure that they do not purchase or sell counterfeit goods, including Rolex watches.

As far as I know some Pawn shops mistakenly bought in some fake Rolex, they will sell out at Rolex price, of course I can't disclose which Pawn shops here, well, if you go for buying Rolex from Pawn shops, you should prepare to have chance that some of them may be fake! Always go to larger older pawn shops as they are supposed to have more experinece to tell, however there are still escapees!

Best way is to authenticate them at A7, CWR or Rolex Service centre if you have suspicions. Normally A7 or CWR charges HKD$800 per watch for authentication.

Watch buyers of general Hong Kong

What do you think most of the general Hong Kong people concerns on buying watches?

1. Price

2. Price

3. What's they are buying?

4. Who they are buying from?

You know what I am talking about.

Smart buyers consider:-

1. What is buying?

2. Who is buying from?

3. What is the price?

Smart buyers are usually experienced watch collectors, expert and watch gurus, they are buying watches they like rather than those watch in hype. Smart buyer may not be a Rolex fan, of course there are exceptional, as some are good Rolex worth our buying, but not those new one recently made within 2020-2023. Exceptional items such as GMT White gold 116719 Meteorite, Daytona Meteorite, may be a first edition Pepsi Jubilee 116710BLRO Blossom red bezel.

After ten years smart buyer' watches may appreciate 80% of the value they bought. That could make a big difference.

Another guy i know he is keen on buying Cartier Crash, he may have 6 pieces from Pink Gold, white gold and yellow gold with diamond from $200,000 to $400,000 he nought between 2010-2022.

How all they watches have been appreciated 250% as an average, that is a great deal!

Well, to me, I keep on buying from friend who likes to sell me as I promise of one day I sell the watch, I will ask him first... this is an important commitment to the seller and that is most of them like to sell me.

Real and Fake Rolex Box

There are several differences between a real and a fake Rolex box that you can look for:

1. Quality: A genuine Rolex box is made with high-quality materials and has a solid and sturdy feel. In contrast, a fake Rolex box may feel flimsy and cheaply made.

2. Logo: The Rolex logo on a genuine box is typically crisp, clear, and well-defined. On a fake box, the logo may be blurry or poorly defined. check the gold logo, the real Rolex logo sits flat on the box, the fake one may have gap between the logo and the box.

3. Color: The colors on a genuine Rolex box are usually consistent and vibrant. On a fake box, the colors may be faded, lighter or appear different from the genuine colors.

4. Text: The text on a genuine Rolex box is typically clear and easy to read. On a fake box, the text may be blurry or difficult to read.

5. A Real Rolex box has a flat and straight seam on the paper folding line.

6. A real Rolex box should always come with white paper sleeve.

It's important to note that counterfeiters are constantly improving their methods, so some fake Rolex boxes may be difficult to distinguish from the genuine article. If you have any doubts about the authenticity of a Rolex box, it's best to consult with a professional appraiser or jeweler.

Right one is real Box

Fake Rolex boxes

There are two of HK watch dealers told me yesterday that there are fake Rolex boxes flooded in the HK market.

So you should take note, as even a watch dealer could buy some of the fake boxes from dealers or his suppliers.

The fake box and authentic box are quite similar but come to hands of expert like I, can tell the difference.

Now we have only two size of Rolex Box the M and L, no more S size.

Currently the real stuff M box is selling between dealers from HK$1200-1300 whereas I heard that the fake one is HK$700 only. The price of the real box reaching hands of end user is about HK$1500.

Next time, pay attention on the watch you buy and also the box, if the box is fake, check 2X more on your watch.

Wish you had a good buy from trustworthy dealers.

Check my other post on how to tell the good and fake Rolex box.

2023 Rolex OP Bubble is available in Hong Kong!

After two weeks of W&W, Rolex had announced this bubble oyster perpetual, we have seen this watch in Hong Kong already. Surprise?  I don't know if bubble is the right word to describe this watch.

No, when you check carefully you know, I think some people had taken a HD picture on the Rolex watch at the show, and immediately copy the colour scheme and design, fabricated this kind of dial.

Well, this is another reason I don't like buying this kind of  watch, there is minimum horological effort. This year they launch a bubble and next year they can launch Kubrick, and what you wear is just a gimmick of Rolex, the long-term value may not be much.

Like the tiffany blue OP two years ago, they are already losing their popularity and glory.

Insider information that Rolex would not like you to know

Rolex occupies one third of the Swiss watch market, being top player amongst all major luxury watches for the last ten years. Still Rolex's latest strategy is to take up preowned watch market by offering CPO service, likely will happen in Hong Kong in 2023.

There are many friends coming from China recently called me asking why they can't buy Rolex, he said Sport models are understandable, but even Day Date and Date Just is not available at Rolex boutique.

Well, Rolex treats their authored dealers (AD) as their customers, the end users are not Rolex customer at all.

Rolex cares about the performance of their ADs commitment and controlling their ADs.

Being AD, they have to keep sales  quota to Rolex in order to keep their dealership.

If you have no purchase history at the AD, you go to AD asking GMT Master or Daytona, their staff will say that asking you to leave contact and once they have it, they will call you! This is a way to make you feel better only as they don't want to see you anymore at all. After you left, most of the contact will be destroyed. This is very different with Patek, they really record your contact submit to the Local office GM to evaluate of giving you the watch or not.

Senior Manager or director is connected to trustable dealer, they used to sell dealers by batches at back door with sport model and least popular models at price they feel good with each other. The dealer then sells at a calculated price they can sell fast and with profit. As many end user tends to buy fresh Rolex, so dealer will like to sell fast and with good price. As older watch tends to sell at lower price.

Many people say that they can get Rolex watches with MSRP, yes I know a handful of people who can get almost every watch from certain AD, as they are real collector and has bought as many as 40 watches for last ten years, if you think you can buy as many as 3-4 watches a year, you may have a chance to become VIP at this AD, however I can see after last years, even these VIPS are less being called by their AD for watch collection.

Best of Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss luxury watchmaker that has produced many iconic watches throughout its history. Here are some of the brand's greatest watches:

1. Royal Oak (1972): The Royal Oak is perhaps Audemars Piguet's most famous and iconic watch. Designed by Gérald Genta, it was the brand's first luxury sports watch and featured a distinctive octagonal bezel with exposed screws and integrated bracelet. The Royal Oak has been produced in many variations over the years and is still highly sought after by collectors today. The first Royal Oak carries a ref. 5402, A series price is getting higher year by year.

2. Royal Oak Offshore (1993): The Royal Oak Offshore was a larger, more rugged version of the original Royal Oak, designed for extreme sports and adventure. It featured a 42mm case and a bold, masculine design. The Royal Oak Offshore has also been produced in many variations over the years and remains a popular choice among collectors.

3. Millenary (1995): The Millenary was a departure from Audemars Piguet's traditional round watch designs, featuring an oval-shaped case and an off-center dial. The watch was designed to showcase the brand's hand-finishing and watchmaking expertise, with a visible balance wheel and intricate movement decoration.

4. Jules Audemars Minute Repeater (2000): The Jules Audemars Minute Repeater is a highly complicated watch that features a minute repeater complication, which chimes the time when a button is pressed. The watch also features a tourbillon and perpetual calendar, making it one of Audemars Piguet's most sophisticated timepieces.

5. CODE 11.59 (2019): The CODE 11.59 is a relatively new addition to Audemars Piguet's lineup, introduced in 2019. It features a unique, octagonal case with a round dial and is available in a variety of complications, including a tourbillon and perpetual calendar. The CODE 11.59 has been praised for its innovative design and high level of craftsmanship.

These are just a few examples of Audemars Piguet's greatest watches. The brand has produced many other notable timepieces over the years, and its commitment to quality and innovation has made it one of the most respected names in the luxury watch industry.

In short, I am a fan of Audemars Piguet, I collect the Royal Oak typically the 39mm Jumbo 5402 and first batches of Offshor. I think this is its 30th anniversary, but due to the trend for watch size is getting smaller, so a 42mm Offshore may not catch up too much of attention. But I think that is second in the list of most successful watch series from Audemars Piguet.

Preowned or new Rolex

Well, my first watch I bought using my money was a Rolex Date Just, I sold it with some earning one year later to the second engineer who bought it for his wife... That was my few watches I bought as brand new.

I bought it in a Rolex AD in Jordan road, Price as $5,025, back in 1981. at That time my monthly salary was $4,004.

Since then I had bought as many may be 100 Rolex but so far may be less than 4 pieces are brand new.

Because I think it's more value I got from buying preowned watch.

Well, many of known buyers that I know, they have very high resistance buying used watch.

Commonly the have an idea, why I have to use someone watch that had been worn before?

Well, I presume that you should not buy any used cars that had been driven by someone or pre-owned home that had been lived by other people? Or you should not go to restaurant that the eating utensils had been used by others?

From the Hygenic point of view, I think used watch if bought from someone, we should change the old strap, and I used to keep the original strap as some buyer wants it. for the watch, we can use some alcohol to clean it, for the bracelet, we can use detergent to wash and clean, that should be OK.

Well, if you are a vintage watch collector like I, I don't mind that watch had been used by someone before.

And the only way I can get vintage watch is buying from the used watch market, unless you can get a NOS vintage, that could be very expensive!

Buying new watch could be good of course if I were financially strong, but under certain budget, I can't  buy new watches. And once you bought new watch, and using it for certain period of time, its classified as pre-owned watch already. a brand new Daytona 116500 white is now $280,000, but if you use it for two months with some hairline scratches, the price is $240,000, (10 percents of the watch value is gone, or may be higher if there is nothing scratches could be found.

So I always preferred buying pre-owned Rolex, because of the value.

World top 20 largest watch ranking 2108-2022

Rolex has been top one all times.

Omega was taken up by Cartier.

AP is No. 3 whereas Patek is No. 4

VC s climbing up to top ten.

Longines is top 7 because of China market

This is purely an indication of ranking by their revenue, but look at the number of watches they make each year.

Rolex 1m

Patek 40,000

Audemars Piguet 50,000

Vacheron Constantin 30000

Then you know who is the best brands of all time...

In my understanding, the largest brand should be the contribution of these makers to the world,

the history of the watch company, heritage, design innovation and workmanship, aesthetic value, long-term value and most of all, after sales support.

In my Mind these are the ranking if I choose a watch

1. Patek Philippe

2. Vacheron Constantin

3. Audemars Piguet

4. Breguet

5. Omega

6. JLC,

7. Panerai

8.  Cartier

9. Richard Mille

10. A Lange

11, FP Journe

12. MB&F

13. Jacob & Co

14. Chopard

15. Seiko

16. Casio G shock

Watch Market April 2023

 From Various dealers comment and over 500 Whatsapp Hong Kong dealers daily trade, I visualize that these are the cases;

Many buyers are keen on Rolex under $90,000

More expensive watches such as Day Date, Daytona is slow down a lot, buyer has hesitation to buy more than $100,000 watch.

The trade activities were high in first two week of March but after third week till now, it is slow down.

May be people are watching the business situation and number of visitors coming for Hong Kong for luxury watches purchase.

Obviously, I see more people coming from Philippines to Hong Kong to buy watches, to their surprises, Hong Kong Rolex was used to be 10-13% cheaper in 2012-2017, but now the price in Manila and Hong Kong is laterally same. Mainly due to the Hong Kong Dollar is gaining a lot.

When I still was in Manila in 2017, 1 HKD gets 5.3 Peso. Now 1 HKD can get 7.2 Peso!!

So, advice to my friends from the Philippines, no need to come to Hong Kong for your Rolex. It will be less hussle to get taxed with you buy locally in Manila.

My thought on Watches & Wonders

There is nothing new on Watches & Wonders at all, well, I did not have chance to go there but we can

get most of the information from many sites and youtubers.

This is my feeling on their Swiss watches:

No surprise, new bottles on old wine.

The Smaller, the slimmer the winner

Yesterday was Rolex's success, Today Rolex is dead.

Platinum Daytona 2023 is having a transparent bottom to expose his weakness.

Hong Kong Watch Market Atmosphere in April 2023

It is not strange to see there are good deal in the private watch market and or from dealers.

These are some of them:-

AP 15202ST $500,000  (it was $1M 12 months ago)

Rolex Hulk 2015 full set $105,000 (it was $155,000 12 months ago)

Rolex Daytona 116500LN white $260,000, (it was $450,000 in 2021)

Rolex GMT Meteorite 116719 is $485000 (it was $730,000 in 2021)

Etc....

Reason

70% people only buy watch when the price is Up, no one tends to buy when price is going down

10% smart people will tend to buy at these time as they have more confidence on these pieces of watch than the US greenbacks, or Gold.

10% of people just wandering between buy of no buy

10% of the rest has no money to buy, that is the case.

After 2023 Q4 when the wars is stopped, when US inflation rate is reduced to 5% say, then the 10% people who buy the watch now will be harvesting...

I have seen is kind of cycle and nothing I can do just jealous as I am not having money to pour into this game.

Battle between sport and dress watch

Sport watch

A sports watch is designed for active individuals who engage in physical activities such as running, swimming, cycling, hiking and other outgoing sports. These watches typically have feature such automatic, water resistance, shock proof, larger dial size to read the time, mostly stainless steel cases, durable, metal bracelet or silicone strap. Watch diameter is about 36-44mm with thickness 8-14mm.

Dress watch

A dress watch is typically worn for formal occasions and has a more sophisticated and elegant design. These watches may have features such as a leather strap, a simple face with minimal complications, two hands, no date, manual winding or automatic and a slim profile. Typical watch diameter is from 33-38, thickness from 2-7mm.

Trend

In the past say 80’s, more people tend to wear dress watch with leather strap as rest would be sport type, digital watch then rather uncommonly seeing could see people buying Rolex sport watches, but Date Just two tone for middle class or Day Date for those more affordable people. At that time watches like Cellini, Vacheron Constantin dress watch with either fine crocodile strap or integrated gold bracelet, Patek Calatrava or Eclipse would be the most common high end dress watches. Hi end collectors were those who craze for Patek Philippe or Vacheron Constantin Perpetual Calendar.

Due to Globalization, fast food culture promoting people’s fast pace and casual dress seems was the norm, the sport watch was gradually became a hype since 2000 as office attire moved to smart casual, no more suit and tire, people wear a tennis shoes going to work even some of the salespersons. So dress watches are not as commonly used of sport watch.

Future Trend

As for future trends 2023-2026, it's difficult to predict with certainty, but some possibilities include the integration of more advanced functions on sports watches, such as chronograph, date, power reserve almost all are build with automatic winding. In addition, there may be a trend towards more sustainable and eco-friendly materials used in watch manufacturing for lighter weight, carbon composite and or Titanium, silicon strap for extra wearing comfort.

For dress watches, the trend may be towards more minimalist designs that emphasize simplicity and elegance. Those older design with skeleton watch, special function of monophase or even tourbillon may add on extra value of these dress watches.

So, what does the future look like? Though prediction is always a delicate exercise, the enthusiasm doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The trend back to smaller case sizes is inevitable and even the battle between sports and dress watches might favour dress in the long term. Neo-vintage watches from 1970-2010 will stand the test of time in these scenarios.”

It is possible that the next generation of collectors will see these neo-vintage models as true vintage, as time goes by. However, they also have just enough elements from the modern era that they can hopefully survive, and be enjoyed, for generations to come. We believe there will always be a place for these neo-vintage classics we know and love today, as they were born to be timeless and evergreen. Their beauty and elegance require no context, and will continue to occupy the hearts and wrists of collectors for many decades to come.”

I would think what if there is a new design of a watch with dress look and sport function are between 35-39 be launched in coming two three years, will that become a trend setter on both dress and sport watch? I think the Vacheron Constantin 222 launch in 2022 Watches and Wonders is one of them. As it carries the design specification of both sport and dress watch.

It is an automatic, simple dial with date think as 7 mm, while 7mm with size 36mm is the design factors of a dress watch? A Typical extreme goes to lady’s Audemars Piguet AP 37350 CE Carolina Bucci 34mm Royal Oak… if your wrist is small, you can carry this. How about Patek?

Currently ten pieces of watch sold in Hong Kong watch market will have about 8 pieces of Sport and two pieces of dress watch and others, Sport watches are the main stream. However more people are going to migrate into dress watches types as the main size focus is smaller one, so dress watches are tend to be smaller. I don’t think a dress watch with size 39-41mm means to me.  That is not the gold ratio for dress watch on your wrist. .

I am a big fan of dress watch since I was young, well, I have sport watch of course but not as many as dress.
