Dive watch comparison: Rolex VS Hublot VS Audemars Piguet

A diver may be the most frequently seen watch in Hong Kong. When paired with formal attire or casual wear, it serves its purpose well – not to dive – but to tell the time without yielding to conditions such as shock, water spills and extreme weather. A diver is reliable as it is water-resistant to certain meters. It is a very good everyday watch. Here, we have three contenders from three brands today. Let’s see which one wins your heart, and how deep you can dive.

1.      The representative of Rolex – the Deep Sea 116660

The Rolex Deep Sea 116660 is the crown’s deepest diver ever made. It is water-resistant to 3900m. But is it really its limit? No. You will not test it, though. The fact is that it must be capable to withstand the water pressure at over 3900m’s depth in order to have the official number of 3900m water-resistance. At 44mm wide and 18mm thick, it is a beast on the wrist. Two dial options are available which are the black and D-blue dials. Price wise, the black dial is around 20k cheaper with discounts. If a Sea-Dweller or Submariner cannot give you the solid feeling a diver should have, go for the Deep Sea and you will not regret.

2.      Hublot Oceangraphic 4000m

Being water-resistant 100m more than the Rolex Deep Sea, this Hublot is a monster watch on the wrist. The dial is very legible with an inner rotating bezel which can be turned by the crown at 4 o’ clock. It is 48mm wide and thicker than the Deep Sea. The main difference is the weight. As the case is made of titanium, it does not wear as hefty as the Deep Sea. It is a good choice for you if you are into something special.

3.      Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver

A diver with a display case back? Here you have the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore which is now offered with a see-through case back. The watch is “only” water-resistant to 300m. However, the polishing and the shape of the case as well as the finishing of the movement are top-notch. It is really a joy to see the well-decorated solid gold rotor on your diver, isn’t it? The watch has an inner rotating bezel which can be turned by the crown at 10 o’ clock. It is worn on a thick and well-crafted rubber strap.

Let us know which of the above your diver of choice is. To us, the Rolex Deep Sea is currently the winner as the price, the function and the value it can retain are the best among the three.

Should you buy the Rolex Deep Sea D-blue? Or should you go for the Deep Sea black?

To buy or not to buy. That is the question.

The Rolex Deep Sea D-blue, or the Rolex Deep Sea James Cameron Edition, debuted in August 2014 to commemorate James Cameron’s dive into the deepest point on Earth, the Mariana Trench, in a one-man submarine called Deepsea Challenger.

The watch features a gradient blue-black dial, symbolizing the dive from the surface of the sea to the deepest part of the ocean. The letters “DEEPSEA” is in green, the same color as the submarine James Cameron was in.

The D-blue retails at around slightly more than 90k HKD in Hong Kong while the Deep Sea black retails at around 70k after discounts. So, the question is, whether it is worth it to pay a premium of 20k for the dial? Having owned both versions, I can only tell that each version has its own character.

I purchased the D-Blue after I owned the Deep Sea Black. The Deep Sea was, and remains to be an attractive watch to me and to those whose wrists are thick enough to carry the watch.

You can see how thick the watch is even on the wrist of David Beckham and Tiger Woods. Its 18mm thickness is one point that makes Asians hard to wear the watch in a good-looking way.

I do think that the thickness and the slightly out-of-proportion design can be a feature instead of a defect. While wearing the watch tightly, you can avoid it from swinging back and forth. I have seen people with skinny wrist looking good with the Deep Sea as they wear the watch tightly with the Glidelock clasp.

But, is the Deep Sea D-blue worth your money? My answer is positive. The Deep Sea black has one very obvious disadvantage, its color. When looking at it, you are almost looking at a big dull diver which is way thicker than a watch is supposed to be. It is almost an instrument.

However, the Deep Sea D-blue is way more colorful. The blue-black dial makes the ceramic bezel look more outstanding. You can enjoy different color shades on the dial under different lighting. It can be purple sometimes and it can be almost black sometimes. It is, with only a change of the dial, a completely different watch from the Deep Sea Black. It is way more fun to wear it.

On the wrist, the Deep Sea black gives you a more solid feeling as a professional diver. Its all-black dial gives you a very traditional taste of dive watches. The Deep Sea D-blue, on the other hand, due to the lighter color of the dial, feel a bit less serious, in other words, less dull. It is a watch you do not see a lot on the street. If you already have the Deep Sea Black, you might as well see it for the D-blue. If you do not have a Deep Sea Black, skip it and get a D-blue.

Running price trend of the Rolex Deepsea D-blue Ref 116660

DeepSea D-blue is hot as there is only few pieces in the market, I think estimated less than 2,000 - 3,000 made. of course Rolex is smart by not telling you and there is only Rolex knows how many pieces being produced.

I have sold only 3 pieces in the past one years, so this is what I feel one of the rare species... of Rolex in the recent decade.  Probably there is a new model launched in 2016 replacing the current DeepSea.

The HK official Rolex DeepSea D-blue MSRP is HKD$90,500 which is more expensive than Daytona Stainless steel, however as we can see after one year, this watch is selling between

HKD$93,800 to HKD$120,000

here is some of the shop we find Today in some of the watch shops in Hong Kong...

HKD493,800
HKD$97,800

HKD$108,500

Well, again, if you think you can find one go for it... It can be one of the good item as investment.

Narcissism of the DeepSea

As I have mentioned that this DeepSea D-blue would have been the most difficult to find...
Well, if you have it, you are those of the few lucky guys in the world...

As I could not find even one in over 30 AD in Europe,

Nowadays this watch has been selling like Euro 12,250 in Europe....

Should you find one, keep it... if you don't have the special Booklet, you may have to Buy one from the market when there are still available... this is the one needed to be included as to qualify as  "Full Set"

Is the rumour of Discontinuing a myth!?!

DeepSea D-blue Ref 116660 MRSP HK$90,500
I had a time to take an annual leave to day to studyt the Rolex market of HK.

I walked through at least 10 Rolex AD shops along Nathan Road, there is no single piece of such watch in these shops:- Oriental, Chow Seng Seng, Chow Tai Fook, Wah Hing, Dickson…Suisse Watch Company...

Well, my first one I bought at Dickson in September 2014 was HK$85,965 (less 5%) no booklet.

The last one I sold to friend in Philippines by hand carry was HK$91,000 Cash with Booklet in May.

Now the price is up to HK$98,000 as of today as our cost buying them is very high! Of course our watch comes with the special booklet.

I am speculating that the watch will go up to HK$99,000 next month.
This is a record high for Rolex steel watch even higher than Daytona Black which we can buy at about HK$90,000 and White with HK$85,000 from Parallel importer.

Could not imagine such a Deep Sea Diver's watch could reach such a price even under low economic situation on Europe and HK, as they are being supplied from Rolex in small number.

For those who have bought it, it is your decision to use it or keep it…?
