Museum Watch from Movado

The Movado Museum Watch is legend
I had this watch since 1980 when I was able to buy a better watch.
Defined by a Single Dot at 12 representing the Sun at High Moon!

The Museum Watch dial is regarded as an Icon of Modernism. This watch was design by
Bauhaus-influenced Artist Nathan George Harwitt in 1947.

When Harwitt dial was selected for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art New York. In 1960, it was the first watch dial ever awarded this distinction.

My one is man's, jumbo size, all Black!

Rolex GMT Master II

In 1954, Rolex had another memorial year is his history, in Switzerland most populous city Basel, they made exposure on their most important model Explorer, Submariner, and Turn-O-Graph as for general sports goers, put this Utility Watch as a new concept to the World, created that kind of inspiration to other watch makers, Rene-Paul Jeanneret, a sport lovers, represented Rolex as the public relation officer, showed to the watch lovers the innovative of an utility watch and that motive attracted Pan AM. The World largest Air line company worked with Rene-Paul as a market leader of watch co-developing the World Famous GMT Master!

Pan Am sent Rolex WWII air hero captain Frederick Libby as a technical consultant as a user point of view, whilst Jeanneret though about adding a 24 hours bezel on the watch plus an additional pointer for 2nd City time... Rolex assigned Model 6202, using Caliber 1030 from Turn-O-Graph as the basic watch design, laterRolex decided to create a brand new caliber 1065 with a beautiful plastic dual colour rotatable bezel. Number with Ref. 6542 as the first generation of GMT Master. Not yet equipped with the crown protecting shoulders.
This Ref. 6542 is the first generation GMT Master, was the First design equipped with Cyclops (Magnifying glass on the date) In 1965, GMT Master the dual colour bezel used metal instead of plastic.

Pan Am assigned the Rolex GMT Master as Pan Am official timer and offered each of the officers of the higher rank, pilots and captains A GMT Master! Since 1960, GMT Master Change to Ref. 1675, equipped with Protective Shoulder Crown, GMT hand was made larger, and most of the feature were quite similar as today. GMT Master, Ref. 1675 was printed “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified”. The Ref. 6542 was printed “Chronometer Officially certified”.
The major change on newer model Ref. 1675 was installed Micro Stella Free Sprung balance with higher accuracy on timing. That is why they put “Superlative…” Ref. 1675 was well appreciated by pilots of not just Pan Am, but other major air lines, and has been the best selling sport Utility Watch for in 1960-1980.

Not just in Aviation, but the Military offered them the best evaluation rating on GMT Master.
Many pilot kept this as the standard equipment on hand, since 1940-50 NANA launched a series of speed and height flying test, In 1967, the Northern American X15 made the 4,534 mph (7,269 kph) or Mark 6.72 world speed record! Pilot Peter Knight worn a GMT Master, he was very satisfied with his watch that could stand 3.5G force and maintaining that kind of time keeping. Edward Air Force Base where Pete was from has been generating a lot of flying heroes. In 1947, Drove a Bell X-1 to crack the sound barrier, Chuck Yeager was wearing his watch , and passed all kinds of test during the WWII War, his watch was Oyster. Pete still holds the world record for the Speed as of today!

So I think GMT Master II , the watch that bring us Energetic thought for the future, man’s charisma on welcoming challenges, man who can take speed, and could be winner against all kind of barrier...
I like GMT Master II as the best Sport Watch for daily uses!!

Where to buy watch of good value for money?

There are too many rich people in Hong Kong, and there are too many people who want to own rather to to appreaciate the engineering excellenece of a Swiss watch master?

I know many people, city Celebrities, lawyers, doctors buy watch for fun, they enjoy the moment they buy their watch and moment people admires how attractive his watch is.... There are too many people that would dump their watch after using for a while for some cash. They never keep their watch more than 2 years!

I have a friend showed me an AP Skeleton White gold perpetural canlendor watch at HKD380,000 and that watch was selling at HKD1,000,000.

Well Why did he buy that watch? Why did they sell it? That is too difficult for me to fully understand them.

I have seen another one, a 99% new Patek Philippe World time only HKD280,000. The Original price was over half million.

Well, There are so many buy and sell of watch in Hong Kong, but I am focusing on Rolex as they are Cheap!... Cheap means good value for money and we will not lose too much after being a owner and user for a few years.

That is the best stragety that I can use the limited money on watch, So when I catpure a good watch, we can consider to keep it forever... why not?!

How to Check your Rolex is a Genuine one or not?

If you are in the market for a Rolex watch, you obviously want to be sure you are buying the real thing. The Rolex brand of watches is the most copied watch in the world, some using very advanced counterfeit methods. In Hong Kong, there is a list of 77 shops under Rolex official Retailer list you can get the real Rolex in Hong Kong. You can get it free list from Rolex. 01/07-09 update. But as As common sense, there will e no risk to go to the shop like Artland, King Fook, Chow Sang Sang, Chow tai fook, Dickson, Fung Leung Kee and Oriental… The common tidbit check list no longer works well such as Real Rolex weighs heavier, the Gold is plated instead of solid, the Sweeping speed of second hands. I have seen a solid gold Fake Rolex! The transparency of the Crystal (fake one looks a bit less clear) and the flatness of the Dial at the number marks (real one is flat, shinny and reflective), The Fonts of the wording on the dial (fake one look larger and packed) Most Rolex watches have very fine mechanical movements that allows the second hand to glide around the dial without noticeable ticks. Keep in mind that counterfeiters know this as well and have found ways to duplicate this as they even put a Swiss high frequency movement inside. Basic step is to remove the watch band and between the lugs at the twelve position you should see a registered design number. Also, between the lugs at the six position you should see the serial number of the case. If either of these numbers are missing, it is a fake. Another tidbit to retain is that the crystal in authentic current date display models (with the exception of the Sea-Dweller) will have a Cyclops lens attached to the crystal, magnifying the tiny aperture 2.5 times. Fake Rolex watches, however, will offer only 1.5 magnification, though some "better" replicas now feature a larger font date to give an illusion of a bigger magnification. Just how sneaky can these scammers get? A real Rolex has a 3D hologram encoded sticker on the case back. For models produced after 2002, a Rolex crown can be viewed on the sticker, and it changes patterns when you see it from different angles. A replica usually has a repetitious Rolex pattern printed on it, but does not change when viewed from other angles. However there are peoples making this look –like real sticker in the internet at about a few dollars. So do not rely on this hologram. One model in particular that many people have been scammed with is The Submariner. The bezel on a genuine Submariner turns only counter clockwise and clicks exactly one hundred and twenty times to make a full circle. Fakes often turn in both directions and do not have the same number of clicks. Another feature to look at is the fond of the numbers used in the date. If the six and nine digits on the watch are open, it is not a true Roles Submariner. One old saying in Hong Kong is to look at the owner for his watch is fake or not! but this is only jokes Well, after all, if you still not feeling comfortable, send it to Rolex Service centre at Central for some minor checks for water proof or simply polishing it . It takes only HKD$350 for an Oyster watch polishing, probably this is the cheapest thing you can get in Hong Kong! After that your Oyster Perpetual Watch Looks like brand new from Swiss Rolex factory! Then they will issue a green repair slip to tell this watch detail and I think they will humble to tell you how the watch is. This is an interesting site that you can review how real and fake one looks alike. http://petemillar.com/rolex/rolex.htm HK Snob

James Bond Watch: Omega or Rolex?

Rolex Submariner, The James Bond watch Watch has been a kind of ornament, man accessories, and as a piece of moving art as a result of few hundred years of Engineering works of Swiss precision and micro mechanics.

Watch was a piece of very expensive stuff in the time before 1960, as I recalled my father bought me a Citizen for me as the first watch for me to enter form one in the year of 1969. That was about HKD$65. And that watch was not able to run for many years, but still I treasured it as that was a lot of money deducted from my father's trivial Salary.

Watch was only available in form of pocket watch not until Cartier who tried to put it on the wrist in the 1911 for Alberto Santos Dumont for his air trip. After a while there has been pain taking effort on resolving the major enemy, Water, Dust, magnetism and Shock. However water will defintely the biggest challenge at that time.

Rolex’s Hans Wilsdorf has well known that the need for a water proof watch would change the world for people wearing a watch for work, sport and office without any worry on damaging it.. They made the Oyster as to put it inside an air tight chamber like case in 1926, and let Mercedes Gleitzes to swim across the British Strait. Overnight, Rolex became a legend. However not until 1954, Rolex made the first Submariner a true water proof watch was able to be made practical for divers.

1956, James Bond Submariner Ref 6538 that can live up to 200 Meters in water was invented 1960, Rolex made a few experimental Deep See Specials that was hanged outside the US Submarine “Trieste” went dwon to world deepest Marina Trench of 10,908 feet. Since then, Submariner would have been the standard equipment for professional divers. In the 80’s TV, Rolex has been using the Trieste as advertisement for promoting the image of sport and water proof function of the legendary Submariner.

1971. Rolex research and development centre had made a special gas escape valve for the Sea-Dweller. In 1972, M. Patrice Chemin and M. Robert Gauret wore Sea-Dweller at a chamber containing mixture of Osyen and Helium and dove into Marseille 600 Metres staying for 18 days as a new world record.

Submariner and James Bond
Ian Fleming novel “On her Majesty’s Secret Service 1969 that was turned out to be the most exciting adventurer movie, that James bond was utilizing Rolex Oyster Perpetual as his most lethal weapon anytime he needed it.

21 Oct 1054, CSB’s Black White film “Casino Royale” (Barry Nelson). The 007 Secret agent was actually wearing a Rolex Submariner. Partly because James Bond was British Royal Navy’s commander, Wearing a submariner was the best choice for him.

1962 Sean Connery ‘s Dr. No “ , 1963’ from Russia with Love” he worn Submariner.
1964 Gold Finger and 1965 Thunderball, 1969 On her Majesty’s Secret Service, 007 worn Submariner.
1995 Pierce Brosnan Golden Eye, Omega, the Rival of Rolex wanted to take away some of the market share form Rolex, 007 worn an Omega Seamaster Professional.
2002 James Bond movie “ Die Another Day” , Omega launched a limited “Seamaster James Bond”!
Since than most of the people forget that Rolex was the first handy weapon of James Bond.

AP Lady classic

This is an AP I bought in Thailand World Trade Centre in 1997 whereby the Thai Baht dropped by 100% at that moment due to the Asian Financial Break down. I bought at about HKD$10,000, I bought an Hexgon Cartier TT Auto Santos at About HKD4,500, A Rolex TT Ladies Date just at about HKD10,000.

The rest of them I sold already and make some profit when I returned HK. I And I keep this AP for one my daughters when they grown up later. As this is the watch of the 80's and was well designed with the shape of almond, you see the crystal has to be cut very precisely to fit the watch. It mechanism is close to perfect, very accurate, I have never sent them for cleaning as it runs very smoothly.
When I wind two rounds, the watch will be alive, and it could run to the last mini gram force of the spring can release. That means that the mechanical fiction is very low.

This is how to tell how good the watch was made!

Now this watch was wearing by by elder daoughter in Thailand Working as Intern oin Bangkok.

How to tell different type of Gold for Watch?

When a Colleague asked me Will Rolex gold colour watch will fade its colour and how thick the gold is plated for me. I think I need to tell and explain the various terms of gold in use for watch. Rolled Gold Rolled gold is a very thin sheet of gold that is laminated to a lesser metal (usually brass). The two layers of metal are heated under pressure to fuse them together. The sheet is them rolled into a very thin sheet and then used to make watch Watch made by rolled gold wear well over time. It is now almost replaced by gold Plated process nowadays. Rolled gold pieces are marked rolled gold plate, R.G.P., Gold Plated Gold plating is a method of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal, most often copper or silver (to make silver-gilt), by chemical or electrochemical means. Watch in the 60-80’s had a thickness of Gold plating such as 20-40 microns Nowadays the Gold colour watch made by plating can be just as thin as 3-5 microns, This thin gold layer will be wearing off in time. Some old watch or pocket watch engraved with say gold for 20 years means that they can be last for 20 years, just to tell you they are made thicker only. They are not solid gold watch 9, 14 and 18 Carat Gold While pure gold is yellow in color, gold can also appear to have other colors. These colors are generally obtained by alloying gold with other elements in various proportions. For example, alloys which are mixed 14 parts gold to 10 parts alloy create 14-carat gold, 18 parts gold to 6 parts alloy creates 18 carat, and so on. This is often expressed as the result of the ratio, ie: 14/24 equals 0.585 (rounded off), and 18/24 is 0.750. Carat is normally expressed in Ct of K. Nowadays, Solid Gold watch is almost found to be 18 Ct rare to see 14 Ct. 14 Ct is only found on ring and jewelery, but no watch! Carat As a measure of purity, one carat is purity by mass The most common carats used for gold in bullion, watch and jewelery making and by goldsmiths are: 24 carat (millesimal fineness 999) 22 carat (millesimal fineness 916) 20 carat (millesimal fineness 833) 18 carat (millesimal fineness 750) 15 carat (millesimal fineness 625) 14 carat (millesimal fineness 585) 10 carat (millesimal fineness 417) 9 carat (millesimal fineness 375) 8 carat (millesimal fineness 333) 1 carat (millesimal fineness 042) Some watch maker tends to engrave 18K instead of 18 Carat, in fact they bear the same meaning.

Vermeil Vermeil, a French word which came into use in the English language, mostly in America, in the 19th century as an alternative for the usual term silver-gilt, is a combination of sterling silver, gold, and other precious metals. It is commonly used as a component in jewelry. A typical example is sterling silver coated with 14 carat (57.5%) gold. To be considered vermeil, the gold must be at least 10 carat (42%) and be at least 2.5 micrometres thick. In the US, sterling silver covered with a base metal (such as nickel) and plated with gold cannot be sold as vermeil without disclosing that it contains base metal. Cartier used to produce a lot of Vermeil Santos Watch as some of the lower line of watches. White Gold and Platinum In Chinese Hong Kong, White Gold and Platinum bears the same Cantonese Pronunciations, White gold is an alloy of gold and at least one white metal, usually nickel or palladium. Like yellow gold, the purity of white gold is given in carats. Platinum is another type precious metal which is used to be more expensive than White gold. White gold's properties vary depending on the metals and proportions used. As a result, white gold alloys can be used for different purposes; while a nickel alloy is hard and strong, and therefore good for rings and pins, gold-palladium alloys are soft, pliable and good for white gold gemstone settings, sometimes with other metals like copper, silver, and platinum for weight and durability, although this often requires specialized goldsmiths. Almost all white gold jewelry is rhodium-plated since gold alloyed with palladium or nickel never comes out true white, but tinted brown, therefore requiring a thin layer of rhodium to mask the tinted shade and make it true white.

Colour of Gold Rose gold is a gold and copper alloy widely used for specialized watch due to its reddish color. It is also known as pink gold and red gold. As it was popular in Russia at the beginning of the nineteenth century, it is also known as Russian gold, although this term has become somewhat rare. With different additive and other element, we can produce many types of colour of Gold, Black, Purple, Grey, Pink or Rose Gold.

Gold Filled Gold-filled jewelry aka "Rolled Gold" or "Rolled Gold Plate" is composed of a solid layer of gold bonded with heat and pressure to a base metal such as brass. Some high quality gold-filled pieces have the look, luster, and beauty of 14 karat (58%) gold. I Hallmark A hallmark is an official mark or series of marks struck on items made of precious metals — platinum, gold, silver and in some nations. Hallmarks can only be found on Solid Gold Watch. In my understanding, Gold plated watch is no a gold watch, gold watch means solid gold ( the whole piece of watch was made form a big piece of Solid Gold Rolex, Patek Phillippe seem did no produce any gold plated watch at all. Correct me if I am not correct! What material I should buy for Watch? In normal selling price as we can see, a Stainless steel watch may sell at $1,000. Watch of the same type made with Solid 18K gold may be selling at $3,000 And $5,000 for Pink Gold or Rose Gold and $8,000 for 18K Platinum. The price can vary 3-10 times with difference of metal to make the case with the same Watch engine! So as a collector, if your budget can allow, buy Solid Platinum watch and Pink Gold Watch is the best in investment as they usually produces less! Of you want to collect the watch because of the engine is good, then why not just go for the stainless steel version!?

In 1987 Summer, The whole centre page of Newspaper had a stunning Ad about a slim beatiful watch. This is AP Tourbillon and I recalled that they are asking for HKD200,000.00 as a used one! That was a kind of price of a 400 Square foot flat in Hong Kong. I had been dreaming of seeing this watch and I had a chance to watch it at Jordon Centre 2nd floor. That old fat man was selling this watch. That watch would cost me a few years salary at that time...

World Smallest Mechanical Watch

This Jaeger- LeCoultre '101' wristwatch movement introduced in 1929 remains the smallest mechanical wristwatch movement ever made.

It was put into series production and remained available at least until the 1950s.
Queen Elizabeth II got one of this watch in 1950's.
It comprises 98 parts, measures 14mm x 4.8mm x 3.4mm, and weighs only 0.9 grammes (including the dial and hands). LeCoultre company have manufactured precision watch components since 1833.
In 1903 Jacques David Le Coultre entered into a partnership with the chronometer-maker Edmond Jaeger and together they manufactured some of the most technologically advanced watches of the era. They also introduced the Reverso watch in 1931, which became one of the best known watches in the world.

The most Punctual Clock in the World

Switzerland is world renowned for its punctuality, a reputation enhanced with the enduring image of the Swiss Railway Clock. The clock, displayed in every railway station in Switzerland, can be found more than 3,000 times across the country. The simple and unique design is an international symbol for reliability and visitors learn quickly to depend on its easy-to-read face to ensure they make their train departure. Back in the 1940s when the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) was looking for a way to take advantage of their name for punctuality and incorporate this theme into their national image, they asked Hans Hilfiker, an SBB employee, engineer and prolific inventor, to come up with a highly visible clock that would not only form the basis of their later corporate identity, but it would help to guarantee on time departures as well.
Hilfiker, an exponent of products that were both functional and well designed, created the Railways masterpiece in 1944. The design, with its clear and easily read face, mimics the smooth running of the trains and incorporates clever features that demonstrate punctuality in a highly visible fashion.
With the famous seconds stop every minute - pause for a moment at 58 seconds and think before you start into a new minute of your life. Was trigger to be actviated by electic pulse at "0" second. The facinative " stop to go", like on the original clock, features the Red Second hand turns full circle in just 58 Seconds. And waits at 12 O'clock for the black minute hand to move on before the starting of next rotation.
